A buddy and I go camping every summer; sometimes for very long periods on end. We have never had any issues on just camping wherever until the last couple years. Is there a way/place to purchase a small amount of forested area in the western U.S. so we can know that we are camping safely and legally? Hoping for an acre of less since we a hoping to purchase a few spots if we can. Thanks for all the info.

US Govt surplus land that goes up for sale is usually not wooded, nor is it always ideal for camping. 9 out of 10 times it's ex-military property from a closed base. Sometimes it can be sold by the acre, but it is almost always sold to a development company through a bidding process.

Your best bet is to contact a real estate agent in the area you most likely plan to buy property. They have access to the property listings.

I don't know where you've been camping, but I know people who camp for a month every year in Yosemite National Park wilderness, in one spot, near Benson Lake, and aren't forced out by anyone. If you can do it there you can do it in any National Forest, BLM, or wilderness area. Whatever it is you're doing out there that gets you kicked out will still be illegal on privately owned lands. You can't pollute the water or hunt out of season. It seems like a huge step to avoid a small problem. Next time contact the forest agency where you might want to go and explain what you want to do and ask for advice and direction, if not permission. Be sure you're aware of all the regulations, keeping ORV's on legal roads and trails, camping away from private property and tourist areas.

Try Clackamas County in Oregon, close to Estacada or Sweetwater.
