Yesterday a loose dog was racing around our area for an hour and a half, chasing the neighbor's dog up to the front porch, dodging in and out of traffic, running full tilt everywhere. I was out shoveling and she ran to me, past me into the back yard, back out again, down 2 blocks (pretty much flying), turned and raced back...........

I hadn't seen this dog in the area before, never seen this one being walked, when it ran to the highway I called her back. Fed her a hamburger and got a rope on her. Her back foot was bleeding from a cut on the ice, and she seemed pretty friendly, but no owner was out looking. I waited for half an hour and then got her into my car and took her over to animal control as a 'lost dog'. No collar on her, hopefully she was microchipped. Her toenails were nicely trimmed, but she was filthy and stunk.

She was actually VERY nice in the car, but I couldn't let her run to the highway, she' d have been dead in seconds. Either she was lost, got out, was dumped--I dunno.

Please, if you have a dog, put a collar and ID on it. WHY wouldn't someone have identification on a dog? Did she slip her collar? I don't know. I'm hoping, hoping her owner called animal control to see if she was turned in. Even over Christmas you want to get your dog out of hock instead of finding her dead on the road!!!!

She was nice, I couldn't hold her in our house (felines, most of them terrified of dogs since they were strays we took in) and I saw nobody out looking or calling for her that day at all.

Thanks people, I'd want our lost pets turned in too!

This was Milwaukee's north side, Silver Spring & 55th St. Animal control was a 30 minute drive south for me.

I called today--NOBODY has come for the dog yet and it's been 5 days. They think she's been dumped.

They said they'd hold till Sunday, then offer the dog to the local humane society for evaluation, after that offer to any other shelter who has room for a dog for evaluation, then to breed rescues (there's a small dog rescue here), then if all else fails, 'make a decision'.

I feel awful about it but we can't take a dog and I don't know anyone who is looking to get one.

Hey Elaine M whats up.I read your question and i think you did the right thing because who would let their dog out in the snow for more then 10 minutes.Something bad can happen so you helped the dog and took it to the animal shelter and if you didn't
that would turn out to be a very bad moment of your life.So i say you did the right thing.Cya.

I sure hope the owners did find there pet, how sad to think that a child may not have his or her beloved pet with them during Christmas or how sad if the dog was being cared for by someone and the owners have no idea that their dog was out running...
You did a great thing....Merry Chrismas

Good for you.
I found 2 sweet dogs wandering together after 4th of July. No collars either. Took them to animal control, and they were microchipped, and ended up going home! So, hopefully the same will happen for the doggy you saved.

On behalf of dog lovers THANK YOU!! I have dogs myself and take care to make sure they are at home with their ID on but sometimes our male has the overpowering urge to run free and escapes. (very resourceful at times) Twice now some kind person has rounded him up and dropped him at the pound. PS he still does a runner every now and then. Hasn't figured out that he gets in trouble. Good thing he has his looks no brain there!

You did the right thing ... thank you for your efforts. If that were one of my dogs that had gotten out I would hope that someone like you would find him/her and turn them in, both are micro chipped. Happy Holidays.
