The four Gospels all say that Christ cried out at the last . 2 Gospels are not specific about what Christ said. Luke and John appear to disagree about what was said.

The word in Luke, commend is translated from the Greek:

One of the things most people forget is that we are dealing with books written in Trade Greek, not proper Greek, 2000 years ago and then translated into English by people five hundred years ago.

Words that we do not think of being synonyms can be used as synonyms.

In this case "commending", or laying the burden down, is a synonym for "Yo, God, I'm done!" or "It is Finished".
