There's no such thing as Linux for beginners really. All versions of Linux are, regrettably, only for people who have experience with computers and know their way around one very well.
You may find yourself having to force drivers to be compatible with it, for example.
If you're keen to try, have a look at Ubuntu Linux. It is one of the most Windows-like ports and is probably the most popular available today.

Your going to get a lot of biased opinions on this one!!!
So, let me start it off with one I discovered recently. It's called Linux Mint, a Ubuntu based Distro that is great for Windows users. I've been using it for about a month and I'm never going back!!! Bye Bye Bill.

The learning curve is just as steep for Windoze as it is for Mac as it is for Linux. I consider myself to be VERY competent with Windoze. I consider myself to be very good, to a certain extent, with Linux. I never could figure out any of the Mac machines that I had the unfortunate experience to run into up to now. Strictly operator error, no doubt!!!!
If you don't know computers, Linux is no more difficult than anything else. If you know Mac/Windoze, it is less easy. If you really like computers, and like to tinker with Windoze, it should be easy!!! Really!!! But it probably won't be.
BUT, and this is a big BUT!!!! If you simply want the stupid computer to do what it is supposed to do, damit!!!! And you don't know how to have it do it, don't even think of messing with Linux!!!!! BELIEVE ME!!!!
