I know what you mean. A religion based on guilt. Perhaps that's the case with Mr.Blair.

More generally, why would anyone turn to religion? My answer is that during our lifetime, we may, at times, feel a spiritual urge. I have felt it several times, but I no longer look to religious groups for guidance.

With regard to Catholicism, there is a lot of stuff that you have to accept, all piled on top of your initial acceptance that there exists a God or Creator-force.

It seems to me that religion orientates the majority of its members to accept the authority of the Church and State.

BTW it seems that now, you can get a discount from the Pope, on your coming time in purgatory, by making a pilgrimage to Lourdes (and perhaps buying lots of souvenirs) It is lucky for Catholics (or is it non-catholics?) also, that the Pope has decided to bin Limbo!

Regards
MM

I was going to say, "Ask Tony", but seriously everyone has the choice of which religion, or none, to follow. Some people are happy to have strict rules to follow and I respect them although I don't always agree.

I was raised as a Catholic but now choose not to practice it.
I don't need to follow a religion to lead a good life - although i do follow many of the principles that are spread across many religions/faiths.
However, my son is in a catholic school - as they are the best! teach ethics and values.

To make use of the teachings of the Catholic Church about how to gain eternal life. Mockers and unbelievers are not compelled to believe what the Catholic Church teaches, but they ought to consider Blaise Pascal's Wager (look it up) before they make that final rejection.

I have read all the replies so far and I am amazed at the amount of bile and hatred, expressed at the Universal Church.
Christ Himself founded the Catholic Church and I take comfort that He also said that the " underworld would not prevail against it". Insult us all you want - we are the authenic and original Christian Church and we have Christ as Head.

Why would you even interrupt when we want to be catholic! Nah just joking! Well Catholic is a fair religion... We dont say we are the only ones who will be saved like the Jehovah's and we dont say that they are unfair.

I am amazed when intelligent sensible people join the catholic church . Over it's history it as shown itself to be spiritually, morally and financially corrupt and I am not talking about old history. Even today with it's ridiculous policy of not allowing it's clergy to marry it tends to attract homosexual males into the ranks of the clergy and of course when they come into contact with boys who have been brought up to respect the priest they are wide open to temptations. And when this happens what does the catholic church do? It tries to shield the priest of course and cover it's own back
