Mp3, wma files etc are only for Windows systems.
You need a music/video player for Linux/Ubuntu - and then it works! Try the "BeepMediaPlayer" (for music) and for videos, get the free VLC Media Player.

That's odd. Everything works flawlessly on my Ubuntu and LinuxMint using many different apps.
Are you sure that your audio hardware is working properly? To test, try to play any store-bought audio CD AND a DVD video.
TIP: The previous poster recommended VLC, and I agree.
Please re-post and tell us what programs you are trying to use for each file type. Then, maybe we can help.

Goto Systems-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager, search for "xine". and install it. You may have to install the proprietary codecs also. For that you may have to enable the universe/multiverse repositories.
