I think I'm going to move to Hawaii and live in a tent on the beach for a year or so.

What is the cheapest way to eat?

Am I going to have to pack my tent up every morning and set up every night so it won't get stolen? That will suck.

Will girls date a guy living in a tent? haha

Any other advice?

Also what is the best beach to set up at? I don't want to set up in the middle of an icer beach. I'll probably be in the Hilo area.

That called being homeless and is illegal. You would be kicked off the beach.

You aren't allowed to live on the beach--the homeless who do that are sometimes hassled and are almost always local and get a break that tourists don't. You can only camp for a week or two. Don't go to Puna and camp out either, b/c you will likely run into MJ growers and that wouldn't be good (for you). You'll need to room with others and get a real job, which at the $12 an hour and less route is easy. Also, it rains a lot in Hilo, so it wouldn't be nice anyway.

Better yet, don't come--plenty people try this, and plenty people end up in trouble.

I think you will love Hawaii. I was born and raised in Hawaii, and I have also spent time on the mainland, West Coast and East Coast. Of course, I suppose it depends upon your lifestyle wants... For example, if you love outdoor activities, there are few better places. If you are looking to live where there are four seasons, then you will not find that here! As far as income, you can live comfortably on a six figure income (either solely or combined). You will not be "rich" with $100-125K per year, but you will be fine. You can also do well with much less, but of course you will "have" less as well. Hawaii is expensive, but no more so really than San Francisco, or New York. Probably quite similar, actually, from a cost of living standpoint. Psychiatrists do well here, as they do in all other cities. As an M.D., you will command high pay, and will have no shortage of clients, but bear in mind that you will not make as much money in Hawaii as you would in other big cities. However, you will be fine money-wise as an M.D. I do not know how much a psychiatrist would make here, it depends so much on whether you are in private practice, or you are practicing with a medical group, and so on. Don't worry about missing New England, you will have plenty of opportunity to travel back and forth if that is your desire. Welcome to Hawaii!! Good luck! Aloha!

I saw some people living on the beach in tents and it looked like they all were living all right. Some had a little more than a tent made. They all work together, so no one has anything stolen. They have some pretty cheap stores near by. It all depends on which beach you go to. There are a lot of girls and guys there anyway, so yeah, I think that they would. :)

They dont seem to get kicked of the beach there anyway.

Hilo is NOT a fun place to live in a tent. It rains- a lot. Try the western coast of Oahu.

You are better off checking into a hostel. You cannot camp on the beach. A hostel will run you $20-$25 a day. There are a couple by diamond head and they are pretty clean and you can l;eave your things there during theday until you check out.

Sarah May is correct - and although there are many folks who do live on the beach, it would be hard to recommend it (even if it was legal). Those are people who are there because they are homeless. It is hard to imagine they would be especially hospitable to someone who is essentially there on vacation. I think you could expect trouble. This probably is not what you want to hear, but please do consider this plan very carefully beore buying your plane ticket.
