Rest on your back but you MUST keep your legs at a 45 degree angle, and put a pillow under them to support. Another good exercise is to lie on the floor with your butt up against the wall, and then just relax. Don't know why but it reallly works well. Get a freezing gel like Biofreeze to cool the nerves in the area. Use heat and ice alternately, NO MORE than 20 minutes at a time (heat for muscles, cold for nerves). Take ibuprofen for a few days at double strength (unless you are allergic to aspirin). Swimming (gently) will also help with the pain and help to build your muscles a bit.

Ibuprophen for pain and inflammation.
Lie on the floor on your back with your bum snuggled up to the edge of the sofa and your legs draped over the seat cushion. This takes all of the pressure off of the injured area.
If you have an inversion table, use it. If not, either BUY ONE or find a chiropractor, gym or physiotherapist that has one. The table stretches and realigns the spine. I have one and can't live without it. I was spending at least $1000 per year on back treatments. Since I bought the table 5 years ago, I have not spent a dime!!!! Works like a charm!!!!
If the muscles go into spasm, try Extra Strength Robaxacet and relax in a hot bath with 4 cups of Epsom Salts disolved in the bath water. This relaxes the muscles. Soak for not less than 20 minutes.
Keep the injured area warm if you are going outside in the cold. It will spasm in the cold as the muscles tighten up.

First you need to find out if you have Disc damage, no Disc slips, it usually splits and therefore a MRI will tell what state the Disc is in. If you have damage the Disc then you need to know before you do something silly and make this situation worse. If we are talking about a pulled muscle, instead of a 'slipped' disc, then rest, exercise, anti-inflammatory medication will help. As someone with a Prolapsed Disc that is edging on the nerve roots to my legs, I am on Fentanyl Patches. I would not recommend anyone pushing a small Disc problem beyond the boundary of no return. Good Luck

My dad also slipped a disk on his back. To be honest he never totally recovered and frequently does have extream back pain to the point where he was to get up and move about
however several things do help him, so he says:
"Walking- Generally long distance strengthens the back" (not for miles however just long enough so you don't get tired)
"Massaging helps- generally relieves pain"
"Stretching exercises strengthens the back and seems to prolong pain. Ask your doctor because depending on how bad depends on the exercises needed"
"Make sure sleeping/lieing surfaces are comfortable yet not to soft. This may not be self treatment but if you don't do this then the other exercises will be harder to do."
His direct words not mine
good luck and I hope I was of some help

Pain pills are wonderful but let's save those for recreational purposes.
Check with your doctor and ask him this exact term.
"Is massage therapy and/or Yoga contraindicated for my condition?" If he allows both do both, it will help immensely. If he only approves one do it, either or will help but both together will add greater benefit. Today some insurance carriers even cover a copay for massage. Also, acupuncture can sometimes do wonders and is completely painless no matter what any of your friends tell you. You also need to ask the doc if it is contraindicated and depending if we are dealing with a younger doc with an open mind or an older guy he may snicker at you. If this happens make sure you tell him that you are trying to make yourself well without the use of too many opiates so he go ahead doc and write me a script for my alternative treatments and let us see if they work.
Hope this helps.
