If you don't think lawyers earn their fees, you are perfectly free not to hire one. Trial by combat was among the principals, not their representatives. Are you willing to fight for your life if wrongly accused?

Trial by combat means the plaintiff and defendant will fight it out, what would the lawyers do to earn their fees in this system???

Sounds like a damn good idea! My BF paid 5grand for his lawyer to have him plea no contest and then forget his court date! And just because you pay them there is not a thing to ensure you that they will do all they can for you! It is entirely up to them on how much or little effort they put into your case. Scary!
