I was at a club on Saturday and paid for my drinks with a tab totally around 30 some dollars. However, I check my account today and this place took out $100.00 in a separate transaction which I did not authorize whatsoever! Its Christmas Eve so I am not sure how quickly I can resolve this, but I am so nervous they are going to not believe me and I am beyond upset since $100 to me is a lot of money.

I never thought about the preauthorization! That makes a lot of sense. Since the $100 hasn't cleared yet, that could be a very plausible explanation. Thanks so much, that eased some of my anxiety!

You don't need to dispute the charge until the credit card bill comes in. But you could call it in to your credit card company in advance and see what they say. At the very least, they will probably be willing to send you a generic dispute form (which is probably not required for a dispute but might be helpful). If they mention taking it up with the business, let them know you don't want to have to do that since it's a bar and not your favorite place to discuss a monetary dispute. That should get your credit card company to help you.

When the bill arrives in the mail, follow the dispute procedure on the back of your credit card statement. It's easy. It will cost you a stamp though. And stay away from that bar in the future, even if a guy will pay but especially if you will be the one paying. They don't deserve your business.

It is very common for a resturant or bar to "over authorize" the amount. This is because they account for things like tip. Now the $100 seems excesive on a $30 bill, but it is not totally unheard of especially in a bar situation.

This authorized amount is generally removed as soon as they process the actual amount. However, with the holidays you may need to give it a few days. I would not worry about it right now, but if it is still on there when you get your statement you need to dispute it at that time. If you do need to dispute it, talk to them first, but follow it up with a written dispute in order to preserve your rights.

Call your bank but they might have you wait a few days. The bar may have preauhtorized your card (they have the legal right to do that) to make sure there was sufficient funds. It might get charged back and the right charge put on...it just has to take a couple days...but still call your bank in case that's not the situation.

And then don't pay with a tab...esp if money is that important to you.

sometimes when you charge something they will put a hold on an amount of money and this may show on your statement , until the real charge gets on the account at which time the hold amount is then taken off .
