it was the closest big town that had a "Holiday Inn Express"? It's the re-run syndrome? well not quite that. Maybe it is closer to the "a hen in the hand is worth two in the bush", hmm, not quite that either. It might be the "ugly wife at home syndrome", she is close, she is available, and she is free. (Honest Carolyn, I wasn't referring to you, snookems.) Maybe it was the "writer's block syndrome", like the Dick Van Dyke Show. "Hey, you guys come over here and help me put some Magi Magic in this story". Maybe is was just the poetic license syndrome to avoid boredom; How boring would this be? "They saw the star in the east and they traveled east to where they came from." -- is that boring or what?
Ah ha! I got it. It was the 3 stooges syndrome (not that there were three kings, there were just 3 gifts according to the story.) "Step by step, slowly we approach." --- What did you expect David Letterman?

They were east a considerable distance from Bethlehem and saw a celestial happening that they interpreted to mean that an important event was happening in Judea. I do not know what ancient writings they had and suppose what ever documentation they had is long gone yet they had prophecies that caused them to believe that what they saw meant that the omen was significant. These men probably were the astronomers of their day.
Also if the star stayed east of them all night this would cause them to be amazed as all stars move from east to west during the night. If they were east of Judea and the star appeared in the west yet did not set almost immediately after dusk this would be a rather interesting phenomenon today.

The language has different possible translations one of which is "We saw the star from where we were in the East."
As to what it was they saw, that has long been discussed. Here is a link about a recent theory.

They saw a star when they were in the east.
They may have been Babylonian Jews who learned from the Magi who served after Daniel. Daniel had been given special revelation to the coming of the Messiah. He may have passed on this knowledge to those devout followers after him.

Good question...
I'd also like to add, why is it important that 3 non-Jewish persons who were looking for signs for their own eastern religions have ANY relevence to the christian theology?
