I think the selection of beer that you will find depends a lot upon the grocery store. But even with limited choices, you should be able to find Sam Adams anywhere. At this time of year, they have a great seasonal beer, Sam Adams Winter Lager. That and Sam Adams Brown Ale (harder to find where I live), are a couple of my favorite beers. Newcastle and Pyramid are also good choices. In my opinion, Guiness isn't that great unless you have it in Ireland, and the same goes for Corona. Excellent in their home countries, but less than amazing by the time they make it to US groceries.
Lately, I keep a few Sam Adams Winter Lagers in the fridge, but test out different beers every now and then by splitting a 6-pack with a couple of friends. A small investment to find beers I enjoy!
Good luck, and if you discover you like craft beers like Sam Adams (which isn't at all hard to find), you might want to try reading a bit on the site I linked to below. Nice blogs with beer ratings and descriptions.

Don't know where you live, but ... my newest fave is a regional beer. It's called Dortmunder Gold, produced by Great Lakes Brewery.
I live in Northeast Ohio, and it's widely available here. The Dortmunder is fairly dark and intense, but the brewery also produces other specialty beers, even a seasonal Christmas Ale.
I agree with you about branching out. Always fun to try a new brew! Don't know if you have a World Market store near you, but they have beers that you can buy by the single bottle, or mix a 6-pack. Great way to test-drive some new ones!

Newcastle is my beer of choice. But lately I have been sampling the different flavors of Sam Adams. Also for cheap beer, I would go with the Red Dog(22oz. @ $1-$1.25+dep.) or PBR(Pabst Blu Ribbon)

or guiness! i'm a girl and the only time i will drink beer is if it's beer pong, or if it's guiness. you can do an irish car bomb with guiness. fill half a cup with guiness, pour a shot of bailey's into a shot glass, drop it into the cup, and chug. it's SO GOOD.
