You don't need to do anything special, just buy the right ps3. I also had this question a looooong time ago. But if you have the 20 GB or 40 GB, you will only be able to play ps3 games, not ps2 nor ps1 games. But if you get the 60 GB you will be able to play about 98% of ps2 and ps1 games. If you have the 80 GB, you will be able to play about 75% (or somewhere around 75%). (I am not sure where you live, so I don't know if your country still sells 40 GB or 60 GB ps3s, but here in America, they discontinued them).

Here's a link to see if your games would work on your ps3: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

Hope this helped!

Maikau's answer sounds like a quote of the wildest rumors out there.

Here is the straight dope:

PS3's released in the U.S. originally contained the ps2 emotion engine, and are fully backward compatible. The new, 80-gb model selling for $499 still contains it; the 40gb, $399 model does not.

European ps3's didn't contain the ps2 cpu, but ran most ps2 games pretty well through firmware emulation. The PS3 is run by a downloaded OS that is regularly updated, so the list of ps2 games playable on european ps3's continues to grow.

PS3's with the emotion engine are COMPLETELY backward compatible (not that wild 5 percent rumor). The only things you might miss are minor, such as the vibration function.

So, to recap, in the u.s.:
20gb, 60gb and 80gb ps3's are 100% backward compatible (ps2 and ps1)

40 gb ps3's are not, though they could always introduce firmware emulation in the future.

On the older models, you can only play about 5% of any PS2 games, and only after you download patches online. On the newer models, you can't play PS2 games on a PS3 period, at all, end of story. And don't get a PS3 anyway, buy a Wii.
