To be specific, I want to cross into the US from Canada by land and then take a plane, so as to avoid the passport requirements. Is this allowed?

You can cross at land border stations with photo ID, but not a passport until January 2009.

Once in the US, you just need government issued photo ID to get your bording pass and then through security (usually twice) and sometimes to get on the plane.

I flew into the US this past year and flew all over the place after. It sure saves time with a passport yes. You just swipe it at the customs office and walk through the gate. If it's a necessity I don't know, you can't enter the US without it so I am not sure why you need this sort of info.

No, you can just show your driving license. . .but Canadians will need a passport in Jan 2009 because laws will change

As long as your flight is domestic within the USA, no problem. Just your regular government identification with a photo will be enough.
