Hey pay attention, you can only do it at the MAIN BRANCH if you are visiting a smaller to medium size town. Even though in many places you will see the logos for MC and VISA, that does not mean it will work there.. I've been in China a long time.. Shanghai and larger cities will not be a problem to get your money out of machines, especially if you are at the airport or a travel hub.. Train stations and bus station you will have difficulty.. Most hotels in Medium to larger cities accept American Credit Cards..

of course they'll take visa. call the credit card company first and let them know you're going to china tho so they don't block your purchase. ask them if there is an additional fee because some companies charge a lot so at least you have an idea when you're calculating the cost. most importantly don't use your credit card to get cash in china! it's going to be way more expensive. bring cash (100 bills are better but 50's are acceptable) and exchange it at the big hotels because they usually have the best rates. make sure all the bills you bring to exchange are nice and pretty new tho. if they're marked with like a pen at all or too old looking they won't accept it because they dont kno how to tell fakes from real ones as well as us. GOOD LUCK

Credit Card Use In China

Go to the Bank of China, your debit card will work there, mine works in most bank machines in China. Some places will take VISA, I found it was generally the Japanese hotels and restaurants, and most airlines do as well. There is no need for anyone to send you money. You will be charged a small foreign exchange fee on your debit card. Mine is TD and it works everywhere. My friend with CIBC couldnt use as many bank machines as I could, yet CIBC advertises itself as an international bank and TD doesnt - so go figure IF your funds are all in a savings account you may need to go online banking and transfer some funds to a chequing account. Often you cant access savings accounts from overseas, and I have no freaking idea why that is. If somone does end up having to send you money have them send it to your consulate in Beijing

In china credit cards are not accepted everywhere.even most of the supermarkets do not accept credit cards. But u can withdraw money from ATM' s that are available everywhere.
Better to take an ATM card if u are going to China. Changing money at Banks is miserable. U have to fill a number of forms and takes a lot of time

Yes. I recently traveled with my Bank of America card to Asia and I used it mostly at Citibank, just to be save. Yes you may cash your money. Be alert that there's an additional charge for using your card out of States. The charges is no biggie. I reckon you to use your card at major bank in China if you wish to withdraw cash. HSBC, Citibank and some well know Chinese bank are reliable enough.

Of course, what do you think, China is some kind of third world country?

But for the Olympics, make sure you bring your Visa card, because your American Express card is not acceptable at the Olympic Games. (Visa is the sponsor)

ATM cards are the best way to get money. ATM machines are every few yards it seems.

you have to tell them that you are going to china first. visa and your bank have verification processes that you must go through on the phone first. then you can use them there at ATMs or places that accept visa. Maybe there is a fee?? I dont know if there is fees for sure though, daddy pays the bill.

You can use credit card. However, before you go, contact your credit card company that you will be heading to China so they will put that in their systems.

For some credit cards, if they don't know you are going to China, they will assume the card is stolen and will lock it. Just call them before you go!
