I can find every way under the sun to make yams with some kind of flavoring, but my husband just likes them plain. Whats the best way to cook them?

If these are fresh yams I would recommend baking them in the oven just like an Idaho potato.

The thing about, say, Candied yams is they are trying to replace the sweetness they had before they cooked them.
The best way to cook yams is long and slow. Bake them at 275 until done about two hours for a average yam. The reason for this is any higher temp the natural sugars in the yam start turning into starch. Of course boiling yams are a huge no-no. Be sure to bake them on a cookie sheet or at least on aluminum foil some of the sugars are going to cook out. Serve like a baked potato with butter and salt and pepper. I can make a meal out of this. Left overs are good too mash the left overs and fry with butter like a potato cake until brown and crusty, yum.

To get the best yam taste peel and slice yams.. Put in cold water to which 2 tablespoons or more of sugar has been added. Cook on low. After cooked they will have a pleasant yam flavor with no additional flavorings. The sugar will bring out the best natural flavor.

Wash the yams and dry them. Coat them in butter (or a substitute) Wrap in foil and bake at 350º for 45 minutes to an hour. Be sure and put them on a cookie sheet, they ooze a lot of sugars while baking. When serving, pull the skins off and eat. They can be mashed like potatoes as well.

bake them in the microwave just like baked potatoes. do not peel. when soft when squeezed, they are done. a small one will take maybe 5 minutes. the sugar makes them cook faster than a regular potato, so watch you timeing. cut open and add butter, and maybe a little brown sugar and/or cinnamon. so good and so good for you. lots of vitamin a and fiber. the sweetness of the potato doesn't come from sugar so they can be eaten even by diabetics. very healthy!!!

I would just bake them in the oven...Depending on their size it will take about 45 minutes to 1 hour at about 350 degrees. Then when done, put butter on it just like a potato.
