They seem to be mostly broken and go for years without repair.

Make friends with someone in base maintenance and get them to start a work order on the repairs. This how we did it when I was in but with the gov. contracting everything out who knows if this way would work now a days. Good Luck and if all else fails talk to you 1st Sargent.

I agree with Amber's response above-try to fix it yourself. Usually it's a bad belt or knob that got knocked loose. The biggest problem is how do you get 20 Soldiers sharing a barracks to take care of equipment and facilities that they technically don't own, so they don't care if it gets broken. One way would be to take away all the machines and give all servicemembers an extra $8.00 a month in quarters to use a laundromat; or at every post gymnasium install an add on modular trailer system with 50ea washers and 50ea dryers. When troopers do laundry, they can also work out while waiting. This way the retiring Senior NCO on detail to pass out sports equipment can also sign for/supervise the use of the washing equipment. Just a thought....

We had the same problem in basic. One platoon had just 1 working washer and 2 dryers. All the other platoons had a washer or dryer broken also. They put in the repair request at the beginning of the cycle...never got fixed.

Keep track of all the work orders and submit a complaint to housing. If those machines don't get repaired the government will dump their contract and someone else will win the bid for maintenance.

You should have a barracks manager/NCO. Have you contacted that person? If so, document each and every time. Let your supervisor know.

Just how long have you lived in that barracks?

You might catch hell for it, but bring it to your batallion commander or someone else of equally higher rank. One of our guys did that once, he got his @$$ royally chewed for jumping the chain of command, but a week later every laundry room had new washers and dryers.
BTW, he did this after years of us telling our platoon sergeants and company higher ups that they needed to be replaced and only having it fall on deaf ears

Fortunately the equipment supplied to barracks is the cheapest models and they are also the easiest to fix. It is easier to find one handy person to fix your own.

You COULD use your chain of command. I would go to the NCO hut and ask them. You have to be able to wash your uniforms.
