If the point of the party is for you to meet and get to know each other, leaving to eat in front of the TV will certainly not leave a good impression. I think you'll come off as antisocial and that you don't like them. These are people you'll be involved with for many years to come, so you should treat them as nicely as possible.

I've had a dining room table in my house for over 3 years. It has been used mostly as a storage shelf. My wife and I have eaten on it maybe 3 times total. We eat all our meals in front of the TV. We like it that way. I don't give a crap about etiquette.

it would be a little rude. However you can always pretend you like them, and engage in small conversation to be respectful. Then once the dinner is over... well, dont talk to them... but seeing that your engaged i dont know how that will be possible.
*and it doesnt matter where you go eat, the point is you're not being part of the reunion. A reason for them not to like you and it isnt gonna help if you go thru with the wedding

i dont know what everyone is freaking out about....YES DEFINETLY take the liberty and go eat in front of the tv, by all means, if u dont like them. you will enjoy yourself muchly better. also, while u are sitting there, holler at his mom or dad to get up and grab u another pepsi or whatever u are drinking. then as soon as he or she sits down, yell for the salt and/or pepper. you know, keep them going! you are a GUEST in their home, they SHOULD wait on you hand and foot! especially if u are going to give them a grandbrat someday......oh, and dont forget.......if they serve something you dont care for, make sure to ask his mom or dad to make u a grilled cheese and some tomato soup or something. let them know RIGHT AWAY that you are a princess, and are to be treated like gold and catered to, from day one! this will lay the boundaries, that you WANT to set, TRUST ME! good luck, and i wish you well! i dont know WHY everyone else was all negative!!!

Definitely NOT okay. You're meeting your in-laws for the first time and you want them to find out you have no manners whatsoever? That is totally rude; to have people over -let alone your in-laws- and to disregard their presence and leave the table to go eat by yourself...where did your fiance find you?

No, whatever you do - do not leave the table. If you like this girl and you think it will last - there will be a time - later - to eat elsewhere but 1st impressions is all you will have and it will make a lasting impression on your future in-laws so make nice and just suck it up!

In doing so, you are probably getting the attention you want, albeit negative!
A fancy get together lasts only 3-4 hours. Get through it as 'gracefully' as you can...OR, fake getting sick and not attend. This way no one is made to feel uncomfortable, including yourself.

its not ok. If you accepted their invite to go over, then do so WITH them.
If you prefer to eat in front of the TV, you can suggest this when you host .
