I've heard of birds being associated with Heaven, but also evil. What's the general concensus?

Doves are more a symbol of good eating. Bacon-wrapped and a little sour cream. Mmmm-m. Too bad the season's so short.

Depends upon the bird. According to medieval bestiaries, birds they ate carrion were generally associated with evil characteristics. Also, birds like the cuckoo were much maligned. The cuckoo bird is a brood parasite and it's eggs are laid by the mother in another type of birds nest. When the cuckoo is hatched, it pushes out the birds that belong there. The Cuckoo is mentioned in "Parliament of the Fowls" by Chaucer and you can see that Chaucer assigns the birds human characteristics that largely reflect those found in the medieval bestiaries.

It depends, as others have said, on what type of bird first. It also depends on the mythology from which birds are considered. You may find that certain birds, or birds in general, are looked at differently in, say, the Native American religions when compared to the Christian religion.

I would have to say that in my opinion they are not evil. In the Old Testament people would make an offer to God with birds as a sacrifice. I don't think God would accept an offering that was not clean or an offering of something that was evil.

Plus Jesus using them in his parables and used them in a way that did not paint them as evil.

Brids are often mentioned in the Bible, most frequently in a symbolic fashion, including in the prophetic word. In most instances, references to birds are positive or neutral at worst.

Honey a symbol is a symbol--there never is any intrinsic meaning in any of them--look at the christian symbol of the cross--if Jesus was executed in modern times, Christians would all wear little electric chairs around their necks, right??!
