I assume litter training would be easier.
But I have never done either.
Every cat I have had has never had to be trained because of instinct.
I got my youngest kitten at 5 weeks old and she used the litter box right away.
She didn't have to be trained at all.
She lived outside before I brought her home so she had never used or seen a litter box before either.
They have a very strong instinct.

Litter training is much easier as it comes naturally to them to bury their business. Toilet training isn't possible for ALL cats but some cats take to it within a few weeks while others take A LOT longer. It's more difficult because it's totally unnatural for them.
Provide a cat with a litter box, and they will generally start using it without any teaching. Every breed of our domestic house cat evolved from the desert cats of the Sahara. Cats burrying their business goes far beyond the 10,000 years they have been domesticated for so most cats and kittens don't actually need any teaching though many will need to learn specific manners surrounding the litter box and some oddly enough, don't have a clue. Here's some step-by-step instructions for those who actually need to be taught:

As for toilet training - based on my research, it seems like the best method is with Citikitty: http://www.citikitty.com/
This method seems to have the highest success rate and this particular product has the highest ratings and best reviews and seems to be the strongest one on the market.
It's the method I'll be using when I move out and say GOODBYE to the litter box.
EDIT: CaliG is right, a cat needs to be litter trained before you can begin toilet training. Saving hundreds of dollars a year on the litter as well as reducing the waste that goes out of my house is definitely worth it though in my opinion. It's not just about the novelty of having a toilet trained cat.

I think you have to litter train before you eve toilet train.. to my understanding you start putting a little litter in the toilet or something for the cat to get used to going there/..
So I guess toilet training cuz you have to do both anyway..
besides if you teach a kitten wouldn't the kitten run the risk of falling in?? So in order to even start you have to wait until it turns into a cat so you would have to teach him in the littler meanwhile..
So I guess just stick to the old litter training... unless you want something to show your friends when they come over..

I haven't ried toilet training (though i have heard of it) but i would think it would be easier to get a cat to climb into a box than onto a toilet. Plus, cats prefer to bury their business so they'll probably take to litter quicker than a toilet.
