What do you do to your cat when it's naughty?

What do you do when your cat does something you do not approve of? like knocking down the small Christmas tree or scratching a kid or knocking off ornaments or trying to eat the lights?

When my cats do something i don't want it to do, like chewing things and scratching things, i firmly and loudly say NO and push it awayso that it will get the idea that it shouldn't do whatever it was they were doing. If they climb things or get into places that i don't want them to be in, i take a tin can full of pennies (or any other material that is heavy and will make a loud noise) and shake it until it runs away so that it will associate the the scary loud noise with whatever it was just doing, and it will eventually decide not to do it anymore. It's not easy though, it takes many many attempts before they understand, but it works eventually. I've also been meaning to try the spray bottle technique, but have yet to purchase one.

You could scruff the cat, say a firm NO and let it go. This will make the cat accept the fact that it is not a dominant figure in the household. If it does it again, scruff accordingly til it accepts that its not acceptible. If that doesnt work, spray water on it.

When our cat does something wrong ,or the wife is yelling at me, or if I have just had a bad day, i give socks the old work boot. One kick usually does it for me.
