Because religion and their ascribed practice of the rituals they use to display worship is the creation of those with strong leadership skills, and dissatisfaction of the existing religious philosophy they formerly participated in. Christian identified religion forms routinely believe in the divinity of Christ, and honor the bible, which is largely the product of revisionist history. Personally, I care not what ones religious beliefs are, as long as they do no harm, and accept the right for everyone to choose the rituals they think will qualify to go to heaven.

There is a very simple explanation. people invented religion and people have different views on belief yet they all deal within the same inherent systems which dictate some similarity. Carl Jung wondered the same thing but he attributed it to the collective unconscious. They do copy one another and are aware of the same sources, hence the influence of astro-theology is evident in most of them. Also the early printed texts like Hammurabi predate most religions and the founders of those religions have read these texts and can hardly not be influenced to some degree . These real links are evident in the similarities between different religions .Time and precedent is the uniting factor for acceptable truths once discovered and individuality is the divider that gives fold to different religions. With the kind of communication we have availed today one can actually take a step back and see the greater picture thus forming a more coherent and intelligent view of these issues .

You say religion but I address The Bible. Very few people in the world believe the Bible even though most Americans profess they do. When we change one part of the Bible and start a new church it actually is a new religion, but a false one. People do not believe the whole council of God or they would not say this or that of the "bible" is not necessary. This is true with Islam and every other religion. Either you believe it or you don't. That is why so many religions exist is someone does not want to believe what the holy book teaches. This is true with which ever religious book is THE true teaching. It is the disbelief that splits and has split every religion ever made. The partial is not the real thing.

Its been often observed that religions have 2 things in common:

1. A concept of Holiness. The only problem is that if they didn't have a concept of holiness, they would not be considered religions, but philosophies.

2. A few common morality rules. But morality rules are based on social needs. All religions believe that theft and murder are wrong for example. But it is very difficult to imagine a society where murder and theft have a positive or neutral social impact.

Most of the stories and parable in the bible. are repeats from from ancient stories written in the text on the pyramids, and many ancient cultures. there are over 100 Gods that follow the same path that Jesus did. But the only thing is that it happen 100's of years before he walked. The Q'uran even has some of the same stories, it was writtien 200 years before the bible.
Ummm makes you wonder how did all that happen, ummm, one GOD, One People, One Love, Much Confusion filter through the greed of man.

I would argue that if you think religions tend to have the same core beliefs that you aren't correctly identifying their core beliefs. For example, the core belief of Christianity is that a divine Jesus died for our sins and is the only way to be saved. I can't name another religion that comes close to that belief.

The muslim god is a moon god, and has 3 daughters, the Christian & Jewish God is Jesus (Jews don't know this yet, but will shortly after "they look upon Him Whom they pierced.")He is the Only Begotten of The Father. This elininates allah, because he has 3 daughters. He's not the same as God. In fact, the cults, have different doctrines of Jesus, therefore they have a different Jesus from the True Believers. They have trusted in a jesus that can't save them.

Most religions in the US are, at the core, the same. They are based on the Bible or, at least, the belief in God, with variations that make them slightly, or greatly, different in interpretation.

Because most people have a moral centre, and the way that they view and act on those morals may be slightly different but in general it all comes down to one thing, 'doing what one believes to be the right thing'
