Prior to being spayed she was very affectionate, playful, and mischeivous. Since she has returned from the vet she spends all of her time under any large peice of furniture she can (beds, couch, love seat). She doesn't come out to eat unless you sit the food a foot from the bed (we have decided not to put it under there with her in hopes she'll come out on her own) and she has only used the litter box ONCE since then. We have a very active and hyper cocker spaniel as well as a male adult cat in the house as well. Is my cat's behaviour normal following this surgery and should we just wait it out or is there something bigger going on here? Thanks!

I have two female cats and when we got them spayed they told us that might happen. Fortunately, it did not, but it's not unusual behaviour following a fairly major surgery for an animal to not want human contact for a while. It should be eating and using the litter box regularily though. Our vet told us to contact them immediately if they seemed to be experiencing any lethargy after a couple days. If you have any concerns just phone your vet see what he/she thinks.

Hmmm...I would definately keep an eye on her. Check her wound to see if it looks okay and not infected. After that surgery, I'm pretty sure she would like some peace and quiet. If you have other animals in the house, especially a hyper dog, it might be a good idea to move your cat (along with her litter box/food/water) to a room. She can have her peace and quiet and well-needed rest in order to recover. I would also put the bowl wherever it needs to be in order for her to EAT. She can get very ill if she doesn't.

If there are any signs that she either may have an infection, becomes lethargic, refuses to eat, I would definately call or get her to a vet.

Good luck!

Abnormal behaviors after surgery is usually caused by pain. Your vet should have prescribed several days of pain medication for your cat. To not prescribe pain medication for an animal after any surgery is both cruel and inhumane, and goes against AVMA guidelines. Animals do not exhibit pain the same as humans--they instinctively try to hide the fact that they are in pain. Outward signs are hiding, pacing, depression, no appetite, etc. Pain in the body produces stress which raises cortisol--and this delays healing and increases risk of infection. If your vet doesn't prescribe pain control, find a new vet.

She just had surgery. She is freaked out! The reason why she has not been going to the bathroom is because when you just have surgery for a cat they cant go to the bathroom as much as they did. She wont come from the bed because she is freaked out. My cat felt better when i gave her more food water and love. If available at a store, buy breast milk from a cat that has been pregnant already. Hope this helps you. And hope it helps your cat. Good luck!

I have heard that a cats behavior tends to change when they are desexed..... but it doesn't to this extent
Maybe your cat is just recovering for it surgery and just needs time to settle in again...
Maybe you should try putting out things you cat likes - treats , toy etc until she feels comfortable to start socializing again

just give her some time. she just had surgery and probably doesn't want to run around much. its not like she just went in for a shot lol. she will be back to her normal self in a few days. just give her her space and she will come around. my cat did that too after i got her fixed. i think it was a combination of pain and a little anger towards me lol silent treatment! hehe but if she starts to get worse like won't eat drink than take her back. but she sounds like she is ok. just maybe still in a little pain. good luck to you!

Anesthesia can effect cats kind of strangely. Give her more time to return to normal.
