Ive tried EVERYTHING to assure him that everything is fine but hes still freaked out! I talk to him softly and let him sleep during the day with no interruptions. Ive had him for 2 wks now. He has an awesome cage with a slide, tunnels,a wheel, and a lil hamster relaxing room (part of his cage). He has treats that he loves and a run-about-ball (but he doesnt like that). Everytime I try to hold or pet him he gets freaked out and runs the other way (when I just slowly put my hand in the cage). I tried holding my hand still and putting a treat in my palm but he wont eat them from my hand. I fed him treats from a spoon and he gets it. When I do get to hold him hes always eager to jump off . Please dont tell me to be patient or he'll grow out of it. Ive heared that way to many times for this situation. HELP.

BE PATIENT :)

You got this hamster, now you have to dedicate your time and effort into taming him. Read up on taming hamsters. They are pretty skittish. Don't hover over him because it may scare him. Don't rush into putting your hand in there just yet. Try putting a treat in his cage, and putting your hand a few inches away. If he takes the treat, gradually move your hand closer the next times you do it. If he doesn't take the treat, you're probably too close. Move your hand further away, but you still want him to associate treats with your hand.

Where'd you get him? Did you get him from a previous owner? If so, he was probably never socialized and handled. Did you get him from a pet store? If so, he again, probably wasn't socialized much. When you purchase animals from a pet store, it's extremely important that you have the employee try to pet them to see of they're skittish. Then, you want to try it yourself. You should never get an extremely fearful animal.

He's timid and scared of his new home. Let him get used to it, the poor thing is away from his brothers and sisters.

You need to approach this situation with patience. It won't help if you're tense. Relax. =))

First, wear a tissue paper around you for the entire day. Then, put his in his cage so he will get used to your scent.

Second, take him out and let him climb around you. This will get him used to your body. If you runs away, scoop him up with a mug or something similar and put him on your lap again.

Third, hold him. If he jumps off, pick him up again.

PATIENCE IS THE KEY.

G'luck.

Well bring it back to the pet store and get another one. Well give a couple days to adjust. Think of it this way, you are a small rodent, and you get put into a store where ALL TONS of strangers come and stare at you. Then a person reaches in and grabs you and puts you into a persons hands. Then you get put into a totally different place. Wouldn't you be scared?

It took about a month before I was able to handle our hamster. Poor guy was both fearful & aggressive but he's enjoying himself now & actually seems to enjoy interacting with me. My SO will pet him if I'm holding him, but won't pick him up b/c I got bit so many times during the 1st few weeks.

In all honesty, if the hamster was not so nice when you got it, he may never grow out of it... Sorry.

Get a nice one next time.
Sometimes they do get used to a new environment. It's like someone was just like "IM YOUR NEW MOM!" Two weeks later, you're still going to be confused. The awesome cage, may have him confused also.

Good luck.

Its going to take a good number of time and persistence on your section to get them to believe you. the ultimate concern to do for now could be %. them up by ability of having a bathroom paper roll and allowing them to crawl into it. once you have them on your hand enable them to stroll on you for a whilst and supply them a hamster cope with. finally they are going to affiliate you with treats and you're able to provide up making use of the tube slowly.

stoop low when you go by his cage because you're taller an bigger than him so he will feel less threatened and scare and when you pick him up just scoop him up with both hands and stroke his furry lil head or scratch his ears :)

take it out some times in the day, the reason it doesn't like you is because ur not playing with it... maybe it just needs some time with you

of course he is gonna be afraid of you look how much bigger you are than that hamster you would be afraid to if you saw something that big and you were that small.
