He was God himself, in the form of his son. He could not go to Hell.

When Jesus die on the cross, He went to hell to take the keys of death and hell from satan. While there, He preach to the lost. The Bible doesn't say what he preach about while there, if I remember correctly. However, it doesn't much thought as to what He would have preached while there either. Did the flames have any effected on Jesus while there? Of course not.
Jesus was already God. Therefore, there wasn't anything for Him to do to go to heaven. Jesus took the sins of the world on Him and went to the cross for us so that we don't have to die in our sins. Unique, if He didn't do it, you and I and everyone else, would only be going to hell. He left heaven knowing all these things and more because He, the Father and the Holy Spirit, loves us that much! He has no desire that anyone should go to hell. But "all" should come to repents.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." John 3:16-18
Take notice of what else it stakes:
"...but he that believeth not is condemned already..." Meaning, do nothing at all, and the moment that you die, you automatically go to hell.
Unique, consider reading the book of John from the King James Bible.

No, Jesus did not die so He could go to Heaven, but so YOU could be saved!
Jesus came down from Heaven, and was born and raised in poor surroundings, and served others selflessly and sinlessly day and night, and then took responsibility for your sins and mine, becoming sin for us, and paid for them with His own sinless blood. It was not needful for him to go to Hell, as a perfect ransom is what justice required. See Isaiah 53
And because He did it all, God the Father raised Him from the death to reign at His right hand as your present Saviour and future judge.
What you do with Jesus reveals what you truly love and where you will spend eternity!
(Acts 3:19) "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;"

I see what you are saying, that living for eternity in Heaven after death is rather paltry sacrifice. If it is any consolation, it is commonly stated that Jesus did actually go to Hell during the period between his first death and his Resurrection. It is also believed that he released pure souls from Hell when he escaped after his three day visit. Not sure if that is the full story, but that's the gist of what I have heard on the matter.

THE BIBLE HELL AND THE NEW HEAVENS AND THE NEW EARTH
The nearest I can figure it out, hell [ and hells ], was created by the people and some deserve to go to places they created. Tophet, Gehenna or Valley of the son of Hinnom hell fire, death and burial by fire or burial by fire [ some in human sacrifice in the fire 2Chr.28:1-4];
Jer.7:30.31; 19:2-5; king Josiah turned it into Mark 9:42-48; the city dump, so it counts nothing for apostles of Jesus Matt.10:28;
Tartarus prison hell. For the angels that sin, Jude 6 [ before flood ], 1Pet.3:18-20 [ Jesus went to visit the angels that sinned before the flood ]; 2Pet.2:4;
the angels that sinned before the flood, kept from doing it again.
The gates of hell or the gates of the grave Matt.16:18; Isa.38:10;
As for Sepulchre, cave, pit, tomb, grave hell, cemetery or burial grounds where most are resurrected from, some from seas or death itself.
Acts 2:27-35; Resurrection of Jesus from hell John 19:38-42; his cave grave.

I personally don't believe in Heaven and Hell! Isn't it foolish to believe in Heaven and Hell, it is superstition! Where is heaven and hell? I can't see it.
I believe there is one Soul(God), he became everything. All people are different consciousness of him. All the perfected and realized people know that they are one spirit and their consciousness becomes universal consciousness.
Although I am not a christian I can say that Jesus was an Avatara of God on earth, He was perfect, he came to earth to show the way to god. When his work was finished in his mortal body, he got united with father(god's) consciousness.

"Cheap"?
For the immortal, all powerful God to step down from heaven and take on a human, mortal body, subject to all the aches and pains of the flesh?
To leave the pure beauty of heaven and walk among men for over thirty years?
To experience temptations and lusts...not to mention hunger, thirst, fatigue, and sore feet?
To try to get the simple message across..."If you folks would just stop being so greedy and selfish and learn to love one another, you could put a stop to ALL of your problems right now!"...and know that nobody really was listening anyhow?
And finally, to be betrayed by friends, arrested and tried even though He had done nothing wrong, and to be executed in the most painful manner imaginable??
Cheap, did you say?
To go down into the grave itself (hell)?
And to do all of this, in order to give US the right to call ourselves sons and daughters of God...to save US from death, and lift us to eternal life!
Cheap??
How much would YOU be willing to give, for a bunch of people who don't appreciate YOU??
Cheap??
I'd hate to think what you might call "expensive"!!

Romans 6:23 "For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord. "

after his death, our LORD Jesus Christ descended to a "waiting place" for souls that were waiting for their redeemer to come, our Lord preached the good news to them and those who accepted him he took them with him to heaven. On the third day, our LORD rose from the dead in order to defeat death and justifiy us to gain eternal life in the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Christ, the Second person of the Blessed Trinity, humbled himself by assuming human nature, in order to save the world from their sins. Jesus (God the Son) humbled himself in order to raise up humanity and glorify us in him by the power of his passion,death, and resurrection! Praise the LORD! God bless.

He endured the pain, ridicule, and humiliation that we would have to endure for us.
He was dead for three days, and rose again.
The Bible says that His body was not abandoned to the grave. Meaning, that He was not left in Hell forever, but to pay the price, and retreat to His home in Heaven.
That is my perception, though.
