My dog whos 3 now follows me evreywhere! i know he loves me and just wants to be beside me at all times, im the one in the family who feeds him and walks him etc so i know he thinks im the leader or his mom haha well i love how he follows me its just he does it too much, and i really want him to be more independent.
When hes sleeping on the couch and i get up to get a class of water he comes with me when i walk to the door or go to my room hes always behind me.
Is there a way i can get him to be more independent? do any of you share similar stories and have ideas or which i could use?.
Thanks for the answers =)!.

I have dog that is similar to yours. I don't have a problem with him following me around, but you can try getting him a toy or a bone. It might keep him busy and give you some time for yourself.

When i first got my dos he did that too. A dog is the most loyal pet and to get them to stay with someone or stay put you could start training.

Basic thing to do are tell them to sit then say stay stay then back up some

if your dog still follows you repeat it use some treats

if he still doesnt stop following you then consider training maybe were you can be with a trainer and so your dog will understand

If your dogs still follows you i dont know any thing else but starting dog classes

It would have been easier if you had started separation a little sooner, but you can still do it. If he knows the stay command you can have him stay when you get up. Just go a few steps away at first and gradually go in the other room. Walk back to him and reward him when he stays. You should be able to work up to longer and longer times. Crate training also works, use the same idea of working up to longer times.

You don't mention what breed of dog you have, but some breeds are velcro dogs. As I type this, my velcro Blue Heeler is lying at my feet, waiting to follow me if I get up for anything at all. He has obviously bonded very closely with you, something that many a dog owner will never experience.
As for my velcro dog, I am constantly awed that I could inspire that kind of loyalty and devotion. She is a comfort to me.
Enjoy your dog!

Dogs are pack animals- following you is what they do! If you wanted independence, you should have gotten a cat. But he sounds like a wonderful doggie!

my dog does the same thing.get usta it. it won't stop. mines a lab and he's just the most affectionate thing. he sits in the hall when everyone is getting ready in the morning so he can see where everyone is going and doing.i think its because they love us and in my case because he thinks he's a person.--good luck
