I don't believe they hypnotize anyone. My only beef with them is of their anti-LGBT stance. Other than that I am indifferent mostly.

EDIT:
I do appreciate that they do express themselves and aren't ashamed or afraid to show this.

I have read down through all of the answers here and I see a lot of misconceptions about the Pentecostal church. First of all I have attended a Pentecostal church all of my life, and I've never seen a snake. I have heard that some churches that call themselves Pentecostals do handle snakes, but if I were you and a snake was brought out during a service, I'd run!! I hate snakes!! Also I have seen some Pentecostal churches where it was all in the shout and the dance, and there was no teaching, but that's a church that doesn't have the correct balance. We shout praise the Lord and have a good time, but we also are reverent and listen when the minister is ministering. My pastor always says that you can dance and jump but when you leave here you'd better be able to walk a straight line! In other words, if you're not living a righteous life outside of the four walls of the church building, your shouting isn't doing you a bit of good!! When we worship the lord and speak in the heavenly tongues, it's the most wonderful feeling you could ever have. Nobody will ever convince me that Pentecostals are incorrect, I have witnessed soooo many miracles in my lifetime. I miscarried my first child and could not get pregnant for a very long time. An evangelist was visiting my church and my husband asked me to go up front and be prayed for. The evangelist propehecied over me and said that "As Hannah cried to the Lord so had I and that God was going to give me the desires of my heart very soon" . My husband and I found out that I was expecting two weeks later, and I ended up having a beautiful baby girl. I don't believe in psychics!! I know this was a Blessing of God!!
Go to a Pentecostal church, be careful because like any denomination you can find some that are way off base, but if you find the right one, you will be there for life!!

Just sticking to why some Christians have a problem with the Pentecostal movement, I think there are three issues. The first is the suspicion that people are faking. To be fair, some are. That doesn't mean all of them are. The second is fear that, given the "trance-like" behavior you sometimes see in a Pentecostal service, you might lose control of yourself if you attend. This is nonsense--God is a gentleman. The final reason is that people who don't manifest the gifts of the spirit are afraid they'll be judged as less spiritual than those who do--so they'd rather believe that no one manifests at all. Which brings us full circle to the first objection about some people faking it.

Incidentally, I've never manifested the gifts of the spirit, and I have no idea whether I ever will, but I've seen it happen with people I'm close to, and I neither doubt its legitimacy nor feel threatened by it.

The problem I have found with Pentecostals is that they are a little too gullible. They are lovely people but most are happy to accept what is taught in the pulpit rather than study it for themselves in the bible. I have no problem with people speaking tongues but it is easily to copy. They use it as a way to say "hey look I speak in tongues therefore I'm a Christian", at the same time forgetting the guidelines Paul layed out about tongues in scripture.
They have taken on board all sorts of non biblical practices like tithing, being slain in the spirit, all sorts of theories about spirits and demons. On the other hand they have some of the best times of worship and they are very expressive during worship....it really is saddening.

Some people are WAY more expressive than others. That is okay. Just make sure that whatever church you affiliate yourself with, they are teaching and living the Bible. Nothing should contradict and you should feel strengthened by their fellowship. If not, then move on.

Hope that helps.

Sorry, I didn't address the WHY.
There are as many reasons as there are people who are negative. You can never really know their motivations but you can be certain about the source. God is not negative. If He disapproves of something you are doing then He will tell you without being negative about it. Look for His "guiding hand".

I love to dance, shout and even run around the church. I also speak in tongues. I am so thankful for what Jesus has done in my life! You would run too if you had my experiences and were set free. I think people tend to put down what they have not experienced or understand. I am thankful that I have been given the freedom with my spirit to worship Him this way, I love it and I know that He appreciates my praise.

The pentecostal church is all about rejoicing in the Lord.

I've never known a pentecostal that was concerned about living the Law of God, and bearing the Cross of Christ.

Christianity is both a blessing and a burden in THIS WORLD, but a blesssing in the world to come.

"In the world you shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

It does not say, "...you MAY have tribulation..."

If you claim to be a Christian, and have an easy life, something is probably wrong with your understanding of God and his word.

Pentecost is not a religon, it is not a denomination, it is a living experiance.

Pentecost most often refers to the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Only people who have recieved Jesus Christ, the Anointed of God the Father, to deliver you from the works of the devil, can recieve the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

One who does not know Jesus, can not recieve the Holy Spirit's saturating anointing.

I don't think they hypnotize anybody. I think what happens is if you don't feel the way everyone else does (yelling, screaming, jumping around, rolling on the floor and pretending to speak in tongues), you feel obligated to fake it. I went to 2 pentecostal churches when I was a teenager and they totally freaked me out at first. I mean I was literally scared of these people. When I got used to it I learned to laugh at them.

My problem with them, and yes, I have attended Pentecostal services, is they seem to be emotionally driven, yet theologically wanting. I believe the "word of faith" movement to be at best, a fringe group, at worst, a cult. I do not believe in special revelation. I believe the speaking of tongues in the Pentecostal churches to not be that which is spoken of in Scripture. Are there Christians in the Pentecostal movement? Sure.

I believe it's because pentecostalists are the true born again christians. They do cast out demons in the name of Jesus. I also believe Pentecostalism is going to be the one world order of faith.
