they used to say at the end of Elvis concerts. Because all the teeny-boppers would stay after the concert, hoping to get to see him again. So they wouldnt leave until they announced that he actually had "left the building"
Now people just say it to mean that there is no chance whatsoever of you getting what you are hoping for.

People are right, it was said after the concerts, but most people associate this phrase with the 1970's concerts only and it didn't start as a way to get people to leave.
This phrase actually started in the Louisianna Hayride days. When Elvis was done with his set and left the stage, people would get up and leave in the hopes of getting a glimpse of Elvis or an autograph from him. But there were still other acts that were supposed to come on after Elvis and nobody was sticking around for them. That's why the announcer for those shows said something like "Elvis has left the building. He has gotten in his car and driven away." He has hoped that it would keep people in their seats to watch the other acts. In the 70's, it was just shortened to "Elvis has left the building". If you have any Hayride CD's, there's certain ones that have phrase in it.
In the 50's, it was used as a way to keep people to watch the other acts. In the 70's, when the concerts were solely Elvis, it was used as a way to try to get people to leave so the crews could start cleaning up.
Hope this clears it up.

I guess that shows your age. ..... Not old enough to remember Elvis the pelvis. Elvis presley. He had such a following of ladies, they used to say this so the women would not mug the stage or wait around after an Elvis show. Did you ever hear.. "Thank You ...thank you very much " Elvis used to say this alot, that caught on later too.

My due date was 1st July so I'm very anxious at the moment knowing that I could go into labour any time now! The wait is killing me especially in this heat =( ... this will be baby number 3 and has been the hardest pregnancy by far! SPD, bleeding, early contractions, severe swelling, excess fluid and a large baby lol....(I'm sure there's more but can't remember it all)... If I haven't had lil man by Monday I'm seeing my consultant on Tuesday but not sure if they will offer to induce or make me wait =( The next 10 weeks will go quickly trust me! It's the last couple weeks that drag the most simply because you know you could go into labour at any point! Congrats and good luck =)
