Watch Good Eats on the Food Network. The show is on twice a night - 7 and 10 central. Alton will teach you everything you need to know from frying an egg to making biscuits to a Standing Rib Roast.

It's going to be fine - most people fail miserably when they start cooking.

Whatever you do, don't watch TV chefs like Emeril and Paula Deen - they don't teach you anything about the chemistry, physics, and biology that goes into cooking.

If you like Alton, you can buy Good Eats DVD's online at a decent price.

I am a very good cook and I defer to Alton. His recipes never let me down.

The dummies books can be a good starting point - but sometimes you just need to watch somebody do it first.

Yeesh. First of all, watch some basic cooking shows. I recommend Good Eats with Alton Brown on Food TV. Secondly, FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. I learned how to bake cookies when I was 8 years old. You need to follow the recipe to the letter. Don't substitute ingredients and measure and time everything. Start by making easy stuff, like cookies and work your way up to more complicated things. It also helps to have the right ingredients and equipment (measuring cups, spoons, pans, cutting board, and a decent knife are a good start) before you start making a recipe. A cooking class would not be a bad idea either. Good cooking is a combination of following directions and having a feel for what you're doing. Start by following directions and then as you get better you will start to know when something is done by looking at it, or how much spice to add to something without measuring. It takes years of practice to get to that point. If you live with someone who cooks, hang out in the kitchen and ask them for advice or if you can help. It's a good way to start learning. If you're not interested or you don't really like cooking, you probably can learn to be a decent cook but not a great one. You have to really love cooking to be a great cook.

calm down. First of all you don't fry an egg in a microwave, you cook it.

To fry an egg you break it then put it in a skillet. If you want them scrambled you use a wooden spoon to stir it in the pan until it's the consistency you want. If you want them over easy, that means after you cook them on one side you turn them to the other side and cook for a minute or two. Sunny side up is just that cooked clear through with the exception of the yoke which will still be yellow.

You can learn from reading any cook book, and taking cooking classes.

watch the food network, go to your local bookstore and get some easy cookbooks (like cooking for dummies, how to cook everything, or I'm just Here for the Food (alton brown's book) I have all of these, and they are all equally great)
just start with the easy stuff, and work your way up. You learn through practice. As long as you're willing to try, you'll do fine! :) I don't think you need to waste money on a class....

i learned how to cook when i got married. no one to cook for me. got good and hungry. asked someone how to cook a chicken. cooked chicken for a solid month. husband asked for something else to eat. asked the same person how to cook a roast. one full month-you get the idea.
during one of my cooking adventures, and there were many of them, i made tapioca in a new teflon pot, teflon was new then and totally different than the today. anyways, when i beat the eggs into the tapioca with the mixer, all the teflon came off the pot and into the tapioca as tiny flakes.
never did tell my husband what i had done.
anyways, you get to be a good cook by doing four things-get hungry for something, find some one you admire for her cooking ability so she can answer your questions when you don't know, research recipes. find cookbooks with pictures and very few ingredents, and find recipes you really enjoyed as a kid. see if you can make it (it will never never be as good as your mother's), and experiment. try something new. you might suprise yourself and really like it. from there, you can start your own cooking career.

No one knows how to cook when they start out. You start with one thing (like eggs, or spaghetti) and learn how to make it good, then you learn something else. I'm 66, and learned how to make peanut brittle and banana bread this week. Took me four tries to get the peanut brittle perfect and three tries for the banana bread.
P.S. - Buying "Cooking for Dummies" is a great idea.

Honestly, and I mean this without insult at all, the "Cooking for Dummies" book is AWESOME for beginner cooks. It breaks down every aspect of cooking so simply, clearly and fundamentally, and it has a ton of VERY easy recipes to try. AWESOME book!
