I'm suffering from an eating disorder, severe depression and suicidal thoughts and ideas.

My doctors have suggested going to the hospital. However my parents are saying that I don't need to go in, because I don't want to recover from my ED right now, and therefore it won't help me.

Other than the simple fact that it would keep me safe/alive, are there any perks to going to the hospital?

The main perk is that it would keep you safe and alive, that's no small thing. The other advantage to being in the hospital is that your doctors can increase the dosage of your antidepressant more quickly. I certainly hope that you're on an antidepressant.

Your parents are wrong when they say that if you don't want to recover from your eating disorder nothing will help. If you acknowledge that you have an ED that is a start. I hope that your doctor is a psychiatrist and an adolescent psychiatrist if that is the age group that you are in.

Many people recover from ED's and go on to live normal lives. I've been severely depressed with SS thoughts, ideas and urges. It's no fun. You can feel better, please give yourself a chance.

Going to the hospital may save your life. Many people who have eating disorders have been more than once. It's a hard disease to get over. What part of the country are you in, depending on where you are, you should check the availablility of other kinds of options, such as outpatient. In patient can cost as much as 100k, depending on how much your insurance pays and how long they think they need to keep you. You probably need to go, though. Doctor's-when they see someone who is medically compromised, a body so small that it can't even fight off the common cold, then they say the word 'hospital' and everyone gets all scared. don't get scared. Get in your car and go. Just make you you aren't going to get stuck for a huge fee afterwards, ask about scholarships and look into coming out to someplace where you could stay in a half ways house with other people and go to day treatment. It will cost you lots less and you'll be able to determine your own motivation and tweak it.

They have information about your problems than you do. They may be able to give you info you need to choose to get better. Perhaps getting rid of your depression first will make you want to recover from you ed. I've seen it happen. I've been in the psych ward before and seen miracles happen. I've also seen crash and burns. However if you do not treat your depression you'll never be able to think clearly enough to do what you need to do for yourself. If you're thinking clears up from recovering from depression, you may want to get completely well. If you do nothing for your depression, hang it up.

I think that they are trying to get you to decide to get over your ED... They might be trying to show you that you need to accept that you need to get better.
Also some of those things especially eating disorder may indicate a need for something else, something that is missing, and your wanting to go to the hospital even though you don't want to fix your problem indicates the same thing.
The fact that you have suicidal thoughts but you want to go to the hospital to protect yourself shows that you need something.
Whether or not you go to a hospital, you have a lot of talking and therapy to do with a therapist. You know there is something you want to get fixed and something that you need in your life, something that is missing.

They will help you get over it, and it can be a huge help. Even if you don't want to get better now, after being there for a while you start to want to become better. If not a hospital you could always try rehab, that helps too because there are a lot of other people who are in the same situation as you.

They can also prescribe medicine for you. Don't freak out. You may only have to take the meds for a little while. I just got out of there, and I'm so glad I let them help. I can tell you, the first couple days will be intense (just a lot of questions), but after that, you wil feel so much beter. Please go and let them help you!

they can teach you a proper diet, help rehydrate you if you are dehydrated. they can also refer you to specialists who can help you, such as mental health, counselors, eating disorder centers. it is true that you are the only one who can make the decision to change and get well. but others can help you along the way if you let them. best of luck to you!

You will get a chance to talk to professionals that have better ideas on what you need than your parents.
