We are a little tight on space, so we need to put these in our carry ons. Can we take them through security?

As long as it is within the size requirements, which it most likely is, it should be no problem. There are no restrictions on items such as ski helmets, here's the TSA website, have a look for yourself:

It will depend on the person at security a colleague of mine was told he couldn't take his ski boots as carry on for his return flight home but there wasn't a problem on the out bound leg of his trip. Go figure.
