I'd have a few drinks and make jokes about my mix up. It's not the end of the world. If it's a good party nobody will even remember!!

A formal occasion is always noted as such. It appears you either didn't understand what formal black tie means or you purposely chose to ignore it and look ridiculous. Pay attention. There are dress codes to be followed znd people who plan functions expect you to know how to act and dress.

Did you think that the code didn't apply to you, or did no one tell you that it was a dressy occasion? If you fouled up yourself, I would have quietly gotten out with my tail between my legs, and realized the world did not revolve around me. If the mistake was legitimate, I would have tried to quietly stay as unnoticed as possible, and left early, avoiding photographs.

You just tough it out and try not to feel embarrassed, everyone makes mistakes! Did no one tell you it was black tie?

depends on how "wrong" i was. how were you dressed and how did you not know it was BT?

*****hmmm. how well did you know the host/hostess and are you obligated to stay? i would have ducked in to talk to the hostess, let them know that "something came up", and exit quietly while i still had some dignity left. if it was necessary that i stay, i would laugh it off and say i "missed the memo" on dress.
