I want to make a chocolate peppermint trifle. I was going to add peppermint extract to the cool whip and crushed candy canes on top. How much extract should I use for one tub of coolwhip. Do you think the peppermint will taste okay with the vanilla pudding in the trifle?

Chocolate pudding would be a better mix, start with a 1/2 teaspoon and add a drop at a time till you get it to taste the way you want.

Keep the vanilla pudding without peppermint. You need contrast. I would start with a couple of drops of extract for the cool whip and stir some crushed candy canes into it as well as the stuff sprinkled on top. I have ruined frostings by using 1/4 teaspoon of orange extract and peppermint is very strong. Might be safest to Google it.

I think that I'd either flavor the pudding by using vanilla pudding with crushed candy canes or use chocolate pudding and add the peppermint extract to it. You shouldn't need more than 1/2 to 1 teaspoon depending on your personal preference (it should taste enough like peppermint to carry through the theme despite the other non-peppermint ingredients).

Happy cooking!

Maybe you should just measure the peppermint extract in like 1/2 teas or 1/4 teas increments and add more if you need...

I think if you had more chocolate pudding than the vanilla the peppermint would taste fine.

Sounds good.

I'd add no more than a ½ tsp. of peppermint extract to the cool whip.

I think the peppermints would taste better w/ chocolate pudding and choc. cake.

I would add the flavouring to the filling rather than to the cool whip since you will already have crushed candy canes on top. You don't want to overpower the rest of the flavours. 1/4 tsp. of extract would be enough. Good luck!

Use one teaspoon if you are using the large size cool whip but if it's the smaller one use a half a teaspoon. It should taste ok--but I must admit I do not care for peppermint.
