An African American 14 yr old was gunned down in front of his school by drive by Latinos associated with a gang.
It seems to me the police seem to be intimidated by gang members also.

They should get severe punshiment or shot on sight!

I agree that cops should crack down on gangs....but I'm just afraid this would lead to stereotyping and innocent people getting hurt for being @ the wrong place at the wrong time.

Being a member of a gang - even a street gang - isn't a crime. Any more than being a member of the Knights of Columbus or the Freemasons is a crime. Crime requires either an illegal action or a conspiracy to commit an illegal action. Police might know in their heart of hearts that this or that gang member is nothing but trouble. But they have to catch him at it or develop evidence of that trouble after the fact.

I have no doubt that cops are indeed uneasy aroung gang members. Gangs are known for their violence. But even the nastiest gangs understand "odds." And the odds are that if they take down a cop, more will come and they'll be wearing body armor. They'll have assualt-style weapons. They'll come and take down ANYONE who even LOOKS like they were involved. Gangs - despite being sociopathic in many cases - are not comprised of total idiots. So the gangs hide their actions and if they do so successfully, the cops can't do much.

Here in New Orleans we had a case of a couple of brothers who watched each other's backs. They were on a crime spree with their gang. Witnesses mysteriously died or refused to talk. Until the two brothers were themselves shot down, victims of "street justice." But the local cops had no way to hold them without witnesses or hard evidence, and that is exactly what they didn't have.

I don't know that anyone outside the immediate family grieved for the two young men. It is a sad statement repeated in many gang situations. But with the occasional gang wars, the young men of various gangs often leave behind grieving families to mourn their losses. I wonder if the 14-year-old you mention was in a gang or was a younger brother of a gang member that rivaled the Latinos you mention.

Summary execution is a bad thing here in the US. I know it feels like the right thing to do on occasion, but we cannot allow it. I fear society would crumble. Anarchy, contrary to the belief of those black masked rioting fools, is a bad thing.

Personally, I do believe gang enhancements should be more severe. I also believe that membership alone should be a punishable crime. The tough part is verifying membership beyond a reasonable doubt. Tattoos would help ; )

Look at it reasonably...
Gang members might shoot back.
Not really any profit for the cop shop in gang members....

There is a lot more money to be made in ticketing the soccer mom for no seat belts or
confiscating everything "drug dealers "have...........
