A digital camera - get one that is fast enough so that you can also take action shots. Digital cameras don't need to use film. That's a big plus and cost saver. We only need to plug it in once in awhile to recharge. Also, photos can be downloaded to your computer. My first digital camera was so slow that by the time the picture was taken, the people or objects had already moved out of view. That was so frustrating - especially with people who refuse to be patient and pose for a shot. Costco has them.

get a canon ixus.
excellent cameras, great features, wonderful video quality, pictures come out great, and its portable.

i do not recommend a DSLR, like other users are mentioning. why? because you're not looking for a professional tool, and you're not ready for one.

Nikon D50 and lens kit. Do not settle for a P&S.

After you have learned the techniques of photography then go to a point and shoot. For now, learning the technical can and will help your photography in the long run. (The D50 DSLR is far, far from a professional camera. Think of it as a starter camera.)

Also please consider a Pentax K1000 and 50mm lens. Generations have learned photography on that rig.
