If you really want to play, find some group lessons at a local nonprofit community music school or community college You're much better off there than the half-hour at the superstore from the metalhead who's in between bands. The instructors at the music schools usually have degrees in the field, and the lessons are usually less than what you'd pay at guitar center.
The real advantage of group lessons is that since you are in with a group of students at about your ability, you can set up jam sessions outside of class. Having one or more partners can mean the difference between abandoning it after three months or taking your playing as far as you can. Remember - music is a social activity- if you're sitting alone in your room, you probably won't go very far- Good Luck!

Possible - yes, optimal - no. The best way to learn, especially as a beginner, is to take lessons from an experienced guitar teacher who can take you through the proper steps to learn to play the guitar well. Sure, you can go online and find information and learn it on your own, but you'll miss a lot of the structure and foundational stuff that people don't like to do on their own. Most people who teach themselves just want to get right to playing their favorite songs from tabs and don't ever learn the fundamentals. They impress their friends with how amazing they play, but ask them to improvise with a band and they're lost because they never really learned how to play the guitar, only how to parrot someone else's playing.

Oh, and those are the strings. Chords are formed when you place your fingers on the strings and strum.

Get a beginner's guitar manual that will show you the names of the strings, how to tune the guitar, learn basic chords, and music theory for the guitar.
By asking this question, you indicate much not understood about the instrument.
