The flags image itself was debated on before the decision was made for it to appear as it does. The red and white used in the National Flag of Canada were proclaimed the official colours of Canada in 1921 by King George V.Although the maple leaf did not have official status as an emblem of Canada until the proclamation of the national flag in 1965, it had historically been used as a Canadian symbol, and was used in 1860 in decorations for the visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada. Sir Fiset had recommended that Canada's emblem be the single red maple leaf on a white field - the device worn by all Canadian Olympic athletes since 1904.

They represent what this nation is suppose to stand for. White=purity and innocence..... Red=hardiness and valor. and Blue=vigilance, perseverance, and justice. But to be honest the People who first thought of the colors of the flag never actually declared why they chose these colors. A bunch of people just got together at a much later time and declared what the colors would finally stand for.

Do you mean the national flag, or a state flag?

The 13 stripes on the American flag represent the original 13 colonies.

Maybe good ole Betsy Ross, had a lil to do with it. I mean she designed and made the first flag that was red white and blue. Maybe she chose the colors as well....

Your question seems to be why were they chosen, not what do the colours mean. What they mean has already been answered, why though...from what I read, according to legend George Washington said the stars were taken from the sky, the red from the British flag, and the white stripes were to represent seccesion from Britain, but that no one really know the Why, it's all speculation.
