I am a cashier at a computer store. A customer said this to me before she left.

Was she out of line? Even though I do celebrate Christmas, should she have said something else? What would you do if someone said that to you?

I said to her, "Merry Christmas to you, too."

You echo the "Merry Christmas" back to her
because that is good customer service, Yun!

**Edit- I see you did the right thing. Good Work!**

Okay, the political correctness has gone way too far! When someone wishes you a Merry Christmas, they are wishing you well. Why can't people just take things at face value anymore and just be glad that someone was wishing them well. If she had flipped you off, would you feel the need to post a question about it? Merry Christmas! Oh boy, now I'VE gone and done it! Give me a break!!!

The customer is always right, so he/she can pretty much say whatever they like. As to your response, does your store have a policy on what to say? If so, say that. If not, I think in this case you could respond with Merry Christmas. If you have any doubts about whether the customer does celebrate Christmas. You could say something less definite, like "Enjoy the holidays."

UGH -- a case of worrying about being Politically Correct!

I really do not understand why someone takes offense if you are wished Merry Christmas from a stranger. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, you should consider it a nice gesture.

If I lived in a predominately Jewish area, I would not be offended if I were wished Happy Hanukkah or Happy Diwali if I lived in an Indian community.

When someone wishes me anything, I always wish the same in return.

People are just trying to be nice.

You said the right thing, and she was NOT out of line. Carrying PC to the point that in a secular society like we have that one cannot wish someone a Merry Christmas is absolutely ridiculous and dehumanizes us!

Christmas is as much a secular holiday now as a religious one, probably even more! Enjoy the season, think of Peace and giving love to others. We'd all be better off.

Absolutely nothing wrong with someone saying "Merry Christmas" to you. Accomodate the customer, because they are the customer. And no she was not out of line.

Why would she be out of line? she is giving you well wishes. God this world is so freaking pitiful, really. You say Happy holidays or Merry Christmas to you too!

Really makes you want to walk down the street head down and ignore everyone because you don't know who you are going to offend by simply looking at them even.

"Out of line"? She was just being friendly. If someone said Merry Christmas to me stranger or not I'd say it back to them. It's nothing to get offended by.

She was being nice. I wouldn't get offended, I've had customers say a lot worse things than that. You really need to look at the intent behind what they are saying, Merry Christmas - and I don't even celebrate Christmas - has no ill intent.

Christmas is a season as well as a Christian festival. Anyone who is offended by being wished a Merry Christmas needs their head looking at (if it can be coaxed from between their legs).

Merry Christmas to you! (And Happy Hanukah as well).
