Iams isn't good food at all, so you're right to switch. But if you think it's expensive, then anything I recommend is going to give you sticker shock.
Dry foods are not very healthy as a rule, but there are some that aren't horrendous. But they are pricy. Evo, Nature's Variety or Wellness are the only three I would ever consider.
I recommend you consider these in spite of the price. If you feed cheap food, your cat is going to pay the price down the road. You'll save money in the long run (in vet bills) if you spend more on better food.
If those three are still just too expensive, then you can probably find better foods - but not at the grocery store. Go to a pet store and look around. Don't be taken in by claims of natural, organic, healthy ingredients. They all say things like that but they're full of crap.
Read the list of ingredients. If you can find a food that doesn't have corn, wheat, soy, meal or byproducts, you're doing pretty well. At the very least don't buy a food that has CORN listed - that's the most unhealthy and fattening ingredient. LOL - and I forgot to mention that you want to see MEAT (not meal) near the top of the list.

Read the labels First of all, quality dry food is an oxymoron.
It will be cheaper in the loing run if yolu feed your cat food that is appropiate for it's species.
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrdiant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?
http://www.catinfo.org/#Learn_How_To_Read_a_Pet_Food_Ingredient_Label
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process them. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4a.php
Please read about cat nutrition.

Most of the foods sold in the supermarkets are of a similar low quality. Go to your local pet store (or look online) for a quality food. Don't forget, cheap food almost always means low quality food.
Also, dry food, regardless of the quality, is not as good a diet as canned food. Cats who live on dry food get sick more often and have more diseases, so you can save a few pennies now and feed your cat junk food and pay the vet later - or you can be sensible and feed a good quality food.

People come down pretty hard on Purina and I'm not sure why. I've raised a lot of old cats on Purina products. I'm not saying it's the best out there, but when you compair to Iams, Science Diet, etc. it's hard to see where one is much better than the others. (Since both use animal by products, etc.) One I would recomend is Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul. Odd name, but very high quality dry food. Produced by Diamond Pet Foods. Look them up on the internet and they will show where their foods are sold locally. I can't say it's less than Iams, but I don't think it's more. Good luck.

I have not heard anything positive or negative about Authority. I've always heard positive things about IAMs and my vet recommends it. The list of ingredients for IAMs is a good list. Check the list of ingredients for Authority and compare it to IAMs. I don't consider IAMs expensive. What would you save by switching, a couple dollars a month? That's chump change.

Authority is just as poor quality cat food as is the Iams.
Natural Balance is a much better food and costs less than Iams. You can find it in a pet store - not the grocery store.

read the label on your cat food container. is the first ingredient corn, wheat, or another grain? these are fillers, and cats cannot digest large amonts of grains.
cats need meat to survive.
also be aware that the protein percentage on the front is not the protein you are paying for. protein can come from shoe leather, feathers, chicken feet, hooves, anything organic and then some. the melamine in the cat food from china was used to boost the protein level.
make sure that meat meal (not by-products) is one of the first two ingredents. please do not buy supermarket cat food, it full of artificial flavorings, colors, extra fat and sugar and preservatives.
buy your cat the best food you can afford. they will eat less of it, so it lasts longer.
google"cat food.com"-you will be amazed at what is in your cat food. isn't your best friend worth the best you can give him?
see "dogfoodsecrets.com" they want to sell you a book about dog food but many of the places they recommend sell both dog and cat food. check it out.

It's mediocre.
Innova Evo, Wellness, California Natural, Solid Gold, Timberwolf Organics, Felidae, and other quality organic brands are better.
Then again, almost anything is better than Iams.
Except Purina, I don't know WHY people endorse that, it is literally THE worst pet food on earth!!!

Authority is a name that is handled by Pet Smart, I think. It is not a good brand of cat food.My older male likes Wellness complete health, or Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul. It may cost a little more to go 1st class, but remember, it's your babies you are feeding.
