Dont mix them, use the correct type for your vehicle. There are really only two types, type A commonly Dexron II and type F fluid. Most vehicles I am around call for type A.

I have always heard that you can use type F in place of type A but not the other way around.

Seriously, this stuff is everywhere, cannot be too hard to find the correct stuff.

Only add what the trans calls for. Different fluids are exactly that: different! Using type F fluid in an AW4 will dissolve the clutches. Trust me, I've done it (it was actually someone using my vehicle). It only took about 200 miles to stop the vehicle from moving. If it suggests Dexron II or III, use that. Don't use Type F in any Jeep trans.

It isn't automatically a bad thing to mix transmission fluids but you will be hard pressed to find any reputable repair person or manufacturer who will tell you to do so. However, technically speaking you will always be 'mixing' transmission fluid when you change it because you won't be able to drain all of the fluid out of the tranny. Best bet is to always replace the fluid as directed by the manufacturer. Many transmission fluids are usable across a great number of manufacturers so I would simply make sure to use a quality brand and try to make sure it is for your vehicle's make and model. It is possible that the wrong fluid will affect your performance and Mopar vehicles (including Jeeps) are notorious for being sensitive to what ATF you use.

Call the dealer to find out which is correct for your Jeep. If it is the Aisin trans, then it takes Mercon (I believe), if it is a Chrysler based transmisssion, it will very likely use ATF+4 which is available only from the dealer at about $7.50/quart. If you mix anything else into a trans that takes ATF+4 or ATF+3 (for slightly older transmissions), you will damage your transmission. Any tranny shop that would add ANYTHING else is a place to stay away from. Any trans shop that doesn't carry Chrysler fluid is not a place to bring your Jeep/Chrysler product. If you add enough of other trans fluid to your trans, it will slowly turn it to a milkshake.
The call to your dealer is FREE to find out which type. Adding the wrong type can cost you alot of money later. The ATF+4 supercedes ATF+3. ATF+3 is now available from car parts places, ATF is not. ATF+4 is fully backward compatible, as it is fully sythetic (ATF+3 is not fully synthetic).
Again, call the dealer- it could save you alot of grief and money.
If you added alot of brandX, I would flush it out and replace with the proper fluid. And...if you insist on adding the wrong stuff, don't diss Chrysler/Jeep trannies as being crap.

As long as the fluid you have is Dexron Type F you will be fine.

You should be OK so long as its not some sort of synthetic . But you should always try to stick with one brand and keep a few in the garage in case ... As always you should check with your manual and see what they recommend

Its always best to use what is recommended. That way if somethings goes wrong. the warranties wont have any quarks in saying it is not covered if you use a different kind of something.
