Okay, well I have a debate about the legalization of marijuana in class after the break, and I'm on the side that says it should remain illegal. Now I know that the opposition will talk about medical marijuana and how it helps ease the pain. What can I say about that? I mean, what are other things patients can use INSTEAD of marijuana to ease their pain?

Well most doctor give out Vicodin or Darvicate now a days for pain. You have Tylynol 3 and a high dose of IB Proffin. Theres plenty of stuff out there people can use for pain instead of weed. Look up all the down falls to weed to counter claim when you battel. Ok yes it heals the pian but as the years go on your loosing brain cell counts. Your blood is getting thinner and you become oblivious to the world around you.

Unfortunately, your opponents will probably have the stronger arguement. See the following site for an article by Dr. Ethan Russo presented to the American Academy of Pain Management on Cannabis and Pain Management:
http://www.letfreedomgrow.com/articles/can030828.htm

The current medical pain treatments are primarily based on opiate derivatives or synthetic opiates. Even the recently developed tramadol (Ultram) which was originally thought to be a non traditional opioid type analgesic without the abuse and addiction potential, has shown, problems with abuse, diversion, addition and withdrawal.

The non-narcotic formulations usually take the form of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or the newer COX-2 Inhibitor formulations such as celecoxib, rofecoxib and other members of this drug class, but these drugs carry the risk of peptic ulceration. Rofecoxib has since been taken off the market for other health issues.

In medicine, it is often a case of using medications, which have a potential to cause some level of harm, but the benefit to the individual, outweighs the potential harm.

Marinol, which was mentioned earlier as a synthetic cannabinoid is effective for control of nausea and the anorexia seen in HIV and chemotherapy. It has not been shown to be significantly effective in controlling pain. Cannabis sativa has bin shown to be effective in controlling many forms of pain especially neuropathic pain.

However, this is not legal in the US currently. The debate over whether or not it should be legalized with a prescription or just decriminalized generally is a matter for the courts and congress.

If you want to know what else people can use for pain control. You have opiates, including methadone, morphine, fentanyl, oycodone, hydromorphone, hydrocodone, codeine, tramadol, plus propoxyphene,NSAIDS, and tylenol.

There are also antiepileptic drugs for neuropathic pain, muscle relaxants, and other forms of sedatives.

In addition, there are non-medication pain therapies including relaxation therapy, biofeedback, acupuncture, chiropractic, and many eastern forms of therapy.

There are naturopathic formulations, but most are nonrefined forms of the same compounds above.

There are reasons people use it rather than your so called solutions. One its addictive potential is extremely low, two many people are not only prone to addiction from opiate based pain killers but are also allergic, Medicinal Marijuana is not just given out to ease pain like candy, it's given out in extreme circumstances, if someone is in pain and the only other solution is substance they are allergic to, then why would they not use it?

Truth be told in SOME situations Medical Marijuana is the only solution

True but they are mostly opioid. Derived from morphine. There is always Tylenol that can cause kidney and liver damage. There is a pill called Marinol that is artificial THC. I am a nurse and have worked in states that have medical marijuana laws. I think each persons pain and ability to find relief is different. I don't think we should not use marijuana because of its illegal use. Lots of people also abuse prescription drugs also.

the poor individuals who rely on marijuana to aid in them in making it day to day usually suffer from incurable diseases...That being said all "legal" cures have nasty side effects ranging from headaches to vomiting to death. On the other hand most people have one of two side effects from marijuana.. they fall asleep or they get the munchies. You have to be realistic and not buy into the governments nonfact based propaganda (Weed is NOT the gateway drug! Weed is NOT addictive for most people!). I would rather a person die in peace as opposed to a horrific and drawn out painful manner that most prescription drugs cause. Any person who is against this legitimate use of a plant should think about how they would feel if they or someone they loved were infected with one of the many diseases whose symptoms are abated by this palnt. One other thing, if you take the time to research any mainstream prescription available for AIDS, emphysema or cancer sufferers you would see the horrible side effects each one causes can be worse then the moral implications the use of marijuana encompasses.

try meditation, or what about the art of acupunture. They take really small needles and stick them into you in order to block your pain receptors. If they are trying to block body pain, you can also stretch and to light excercise on a daily basis to help relieve this pain. Yoga, Martial Arts... etc. People have been dealing with pain for thousands of years without Marijuana! good luck -Alan

You're fighting a losing battle. All the alternatives are either addictive or less effective.
