No it isn't animals have even display affection to the same sex. In the 1970 the American Psychiatric Association concluded the homosexuality was not a mental illness.
In fact recent testing and studies have show a genetic link.

It hasn't been considered a mental illness in the USA since about 1974.
It doesn't matter how many people "agree" if those people aren't medical doctors or licensed psychologists.
Some mental illnesses have clearly identified physical causes, and many appear to have a genetic basis. Mental illness is defined by behavior and whether the behavior causes a significant impairment in work, education, family or social life.
Homosexuality may or may not have physical or genetic causes, but that doesn't have anything to do with it being a considered a mental illness or not. Homosexuality would be considered a mental illness if it was thought to cause impairment in an individual's daily functioning. The American Psychiatric Association has determined that it does not.

Most educated people recognize that it is completely inappropriate to call it a mental illness. There is nothing to base that claim on except bias and ignorance. They took it out of the DSM (it's like the bible of psychological disorders) years ago. Just because some people do not understand homosexuality does not make it wrong or bad.

No, I do not think it is a mental illness. I think most homosexuals are just born that way...from chromosomal differences in utero. Then I think there are some that do choose that lifestyle for various reasons. Gender identity disorder is listed as a psychiatric diagnosis in the DSM-III book (big book that lists all mental illnesses and disorders that psychiatrists use)...but gender identity disorder is not the same thing as homosexuality.

I recently saw slides of the human brain in a science magazine . One was of a straight man one was of a gay man. There is a marked difference in the slides, however I don't believe it is a mental illness. It would appear it had an organic cause.

If I'm not mistaken, there was a period in time when it was generally considered a mental illness. But, in this generation, I guess, there are very few people left who think that way. Personally, though, I'm not in favor of such lifestyle because people who are into it don't seem to be fulfilling their purpose here on earth (just my own personal belief). But, nevertheless, I DO RESPECT PEOPLES' INDIVIDUALITY.

Just because your gay doesn't mean your mentally ill.
Though people who are gay may have mental illnesses that any common straight person may have.
