What is the religion "Mormon"?? I know of someone who is mormon, and I'm still REALLY confused about them. Are they Christian, or some other religion completely? Or are they a branch of Christian like Baptists? And what are their beliefs...and what sets them apart from everyone else???

Plus, if God loves us "oh, so much." why does he punish us if we don't pray one day, or eve if we step out of line even the slightest bit?? That's just really stupid, if you ask me. Can't he be a little indulgent??

Mormons are formally called 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints'. They are Christian but not a branch of any other denomination.
The basic beliefs are outlined here:

There is no reason to be confused. The answers are easily found - happy searching.

Mormons:
God is a material creature who was once a man as we are now men. They say men can finally achieve godhood and that there are many gods.
BIBLE; They have "new scripture" and the writtings of Jooeph
Smith are divinely inspired revelations --------- God's nine-
teenth century additions to the Bible.
Sin; Man is progressively becoming a god. Mormons teach
that Adam's sin in Eden was necessary in order to provide
parentage for the spirit children who were ready and waiting
for the experience of earth life.
Salvation; comes by works and all men will spend eternity on some level of a multistoried heaven. The level will be determined by the scope of each man's good works.

Please ignore the Mormon haters here. They'll feed you all kinds of stuff trying to slander Mormons.
1. They are Christian
2. They believe that there is a prophet on the earth today
3. They believe in the Bible
4. They believe in another book, similar to the bible, but written in the Americas rather than the Old world. It was also written by prophets.
Those are the big ones. In day to day life, Mormons have a health code (no alcohol, coffee, tea, smoking, or drug abuse). And a Moral code (no sexual relationships before marriage, fidelity after marriage). They go to church on Sundays and periodically go to Temples to worship.
Hope that helps.

The Prophet Joseph Smith said that an 1823 visitation from a resurrected prophet and angel named Moroni led to his finding and unearthing (in 1827) a long-buried book, inscribed on metal plates, which contained a record of God's dealings with the ancient Israelite inhabitants of the Americas.
The record, along with other artifacts (including a sword, a compass-like device, a breastplate and what Smith referred to as the Urim and Thummim), was buried in a hill near his home. On September 22, 1827, Smith's record indicates that the angel allowed him (after years of waiting and preparation) to take the plates and other artifacts. Almost immediately thereafter Smith began having difficulties with people trying to discover where the plates were hidden on the Smith farm.
It should be noted that the prophet Joseph Smith was the first man to claim he had spoken to an angel in two millenia.

Mormon is a term used to describe the adherents, practitioners, followers or constituents of Mormonism. The term most often refers to a member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), which is commonly called the Mormon Church. The LDS Church believes that "Mormon" may only properly be applied to its members; however, the term is occasionally used more broadly to describe any individual or group that claims belief in the Book of Mormon, including other Latter Day Saints groups. According to Latter Day Saint belief, Mormon is the name of the prophet who compiled the book of scripture known as the Book of Mormon.

Hey Moires Fate
Maybe the reason you have such a low opinion of them is because you are completely ignorant of what they teach, who they are and how they live their life.
This is proven in your answer where you get pretty much everything twisted around or just plain wrong about mormons.
Please dont believe this total bigot about mormons. He/she clearly doesnt really care to know what mormons really believe or what kind of people they really are. All he/she wants to do is pass judgement and spread lies.

Greetings all, I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and I give thanks to the one true and living God, the creator of all things. Now Let's get down to business.
Mormanism as many other religious beliefs is not something that God intended for man. You will find in the scriptures that God continuously urges the human family to be holy because that is what he is.
Holiness do not leave any room for man to corrupt or to give insight, but he that follow therein will find that it takes a lot of self denial and discipline (something that many of us lack).
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints founded by Joseph Smith is where this Mormon doctrine evolved from. In fact I have had the opportunity to speak to many groups of this particular belief and all have said that they are NOT really Mormons and Mormon is a name that has been given unto them as a result of the scriptures compiled together by prophets who lived in the America during 600 B.C. to 421 A.D. These scriptures is beleived to be translated by Joseph Smith.
Let us not be decieved, the King James Bible do give references to other books that are not found in the King James Bible but it do not in no wise mention anything about one Joseph Smith or Mormonism. Now in the many conversations that I have had with members of this church they all say that Joseph Smith is the one chosen to restore the church of God???
Now someone correct me if I am wrong but is not that what the Lord Jesus Christ gave himself for? Not to mention, I have been told that if I do not have the book of Mormons that I will no be able to have a real relationship with God and do not have a good chance of eternally felowshiping with God. I have been told this by more than one from this church.
In the words of the Lord Jesus...WOE UNTO YOU!
As God have said be ye holy because he is holy, if we be any other thing we are in error!
Why do we think God calls his scriptures, word, angels, apostles, prophets, and his people holy? Because he want us to be just like him...Holy!
Now just as you have said it is confusing as is all religious denominations. Paul said he would that we all speak the same thing so why are we so divided? Because religious denominations keep us separated. Every one claim to have the pure word of God yet we have Mormon's, Baptist's, Petecostal and the list goes on. This all you can eat denomination mentality devides us because they are all man made.
If I can go on line and find out where and who started a religion or denomination it is not of God. Let us try to research Holiness and you will find it was BEFORE the foundatin of the earth.
So Mormon is not the way to go, neither is any other denomination that God did not set up but was set up with the understanding of man. Sadly, many of the leaders in what we call the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ will say I am crazy but God and myself ask the golden question... is it in the scriptures? Can you find Catholic, Methodist, Seven Day Adventist etc. in the Holy Scriptures? I do not read where the apostles called themselves A.M.E or Jehovah's Witnesses in the book of Acts when the physical church began. And what was Muslims called before the prophet Mohammad? Wrong again!
We have to abide within the scriptures and if it is not there GET RID OF IT! I tell you that you will not find any of these denominations or religions in the scriptures so search hard if you wish
I have had the privilege to address many on issues regarding what God have to say on the matter and even when we many read what the word say they still do not want to change. And sometimes when they read and do not find what they are looking for they make junk up! WOE UNTO YOU!
WOE UNTO ALL FALSE DOCTRINE!
In closing I say again, show me in the scriptures where any other religion or denomination is urged by God that we should be and I will have no other choice but to be that. If you can not find it ask God for the truth and do no settle. He said if any man lack wisdom let him ask of God that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not.
For more insight and scriptures in needed visit some of my previous answers on other questions. By the power of God I have given much scriptual references.
Peace to you all

They call themselves Christian; their official name is:
"Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints"
But they do not accept Jesus as divine as Christians do.
They have also added the Book of Mormon to the Bible.
All other Christian churches do not accept them as valid.
