I want to remodel a home for retirement will use tile or wood for living room and dining, but don't know about the stairs will carpet be safe surface, will wood be too slippery or not wear well?

I agree with Ed. The choice depends on the look you want. Wooden stairs with an elegant carpet runner looks more expensive than wall to wall, I think. :)

You could use wood for the stairs and a carpet runner up the center. Or carpet the stairs wall to wall.
Runners are normally 27"-30" in width.
Carpet is safer with less chance of slipping.
