read the name of the processes running. if it doesn't have the User Name of SYSTEM or LOCAL SERVICE, and you don't know what it is --- end the process --- its probably spy ware. Ad-ware is fantastic for this type of clean up btw.
Also, it can't be answered if the number of processes is normal or not. Although a finite amount is showing, there is no way to know if they are actually running. They are taking up RAM but not necessarily running. My computer usually has 60ish processes running. All that are not spy-ware/trojans.

56 Processes seem to be a high figure. Are you running Resource-Intensive Programs like Code Generators ( Sun Java Studio,Eclipse,Microsoft Visual Studio,Weblogic ) , Databases like Oracle , Heavy Games etc ? If yes,It is possible that there are a number of processes that are running .Also check in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services (If you have Windows O/S - for Unix you need to check Configuration files of Individual Programs) and check how many Services are set to Automatic Start .If possible, set those which you don't require to be started automatically each time you boot your Laptop to manual . But be careful and do this only If you are confident about which program is used for both. Also run a Full System Scan with a Good Anti-Virus and check for the presence of any Worm/Trojan/Virus. A Trojan could be spawning an extra Process. If nothing helps, call a System Specialist.

That's a little excessive. I try and aim for about 45. Notice that when you boot XP in safe mode, you average about 35-38 processes. If you want to try and eliminate some of those unecessary processes, check out the web site http://www.processlibrary.com/ . Just type in the process and the site will give you a description of the process. From there, you can decide if you want to keep that process running or stop it. You can also play around with processes and find out which ones are worth keeping, but don't play with anything you are not familiar. By removing some of your processes you will improve your computer's performance. Good luck and happy computing!

running processes or just processes, thats nothing compared to some computers, you can have liek 100 on there if you have enough RAM and processing power dont really worry about it, as long as your not running like 57 internet windows lol in which case your computer will freeze up. w8 a second i have exactly 56 too? haha, guess thats the norm for xp....or maybe just coincidence, well some of it is system software that comes with it and some of it can be stuff that you download "owner" download to your computer and run...thats called application software...
btw any of those processes with the file extension .exe which stands for executable file can be opened in the MS-DOS command prompt, not that it matters, just letting you know...
just type hold windows button and R then type in cmd and hit or you can get to the command prompt by clicking on start programs accessories and then command prompt then in the command prompt type in "start filename.exe"(w/o those quotes) enjoy!

Sadly, it might be normal with Windows :(
If you wanna know whats what, type the whole filename (eg. ctfmon.exe) into google and click on one of the websites that explain them to you. Afterwords, it is your decision to stop that process or not... Good luck.
Have a setup CD handy if you wanna stop processes!

Yep - but just click on the CPU column to see which is using the most processing.
