I heard the British army are recruiting 700 snippers? Is this true? If so would 29 / 30 be 2 old? I'm a little of a drifter on my career & get bored quickly so would it take long to qualify or be told I'm not good enough. I've always loved the idea of a snipper as I am not a fighter at all I just adore the skill of assaination.

First you have to be a marksman at very long range. This means exceptional eyesight and steady hands. You would typically be expected to classify at ranges of over 700 metres.

Second, raw recruits are not acceptable as snipers. You have to demonstrate good soldiering ability and aptitude and be at least recommended for promotion. This eliminates types like you!

After all this there is the issue of emotional and mental stability. I have a friend, who was a sniper. The experience of cold blooded killing has left him an emotional and mental wreck........ and incurably alcoholic..........

The maximum age to commence full time service in the British Army is 33.

However, perhaps the idea of joining to be a sniper isn't the best goal for you. The recruitment of snipers is all done internally - in other words, you already need to be a soldier to apply. To be a sniper, you will likely have to remain a regular infantryman in the Corps of Infantry for possibly years until you prove you are adept enough with marksmanship and fieldcraft to do the training.

If you are a qualified marksman then try enlisting. I'm not sure who the target[s] are going to be, but my thinking is that we need a few dozen or more skilled marksmen in Afghanistan. There is an Afghan marksman who we need to take out, he's been killing British soldiers with impunity, time to put an end to this warrior's career.

You would never be considered to be trained as a Sniper unless you had high scores on the rifle range between 800 and a 1,000 yards. You also do intensive training in camouflage as you have to learn to blend into your surroundings. Then on active service you must be prepared to sit for hours waiting for a suitable target.

Mate, if you are serious about this, let me give you some advice so perhaps you will come to your senses. Being a sniper is not a career - is something will stain your immortal soul. Something you must live with now and in the hereafter and has destroyed many a man. Should only be done for a cause you are 100% sure of, for only then you may have the moral strength to live with what you have done - certainly not for the mercenary and brutal Brit army.

1 You need to be a regular before being considered for sniper training.
2 You will need to be an excellent shot and show the aptitude for sniper training.
3 It's not the job you think it is - so don't bother.

Firstly you have to be in the armed services........once you've been in for around 3 years you can apply for Sniper training.

You'll be assessed both medically and mentally and they'll also want to be sure of your reasons.

You have to be an excellent marksman all-ready, you have to be fitter than your fellow soldiers or marines (contrary to belief being a Sniper is VERY physically demanding)

But to be honest I wouldn't bother applying from what you have written (indeed the way you have written) I doubt you would meet the criteria.

If you get bored quickly being a Sniper is definitely not for you!! Also a Sniper is NOT an assassin but a highly skilled marksman.

Well it looks glamorous on television but how would you like to see a 12 year old boy hold a gun and shoot towards your commorades a few feet a way?. You would have you kill him. I think it takes a certain individual to become a sniper. It isnt always how it is on television. War isnt glamorous. I was fully planning on joining the army but later changed my mind.

Sniping is more often terrorism than assassination.
You focus on the toilet tent so guys can relax no where.
You shoot to wound to hold up forces as they carry wounded.
You get worst possible treatment if captured.
Now are you gonna volunteer ?
