Since you are limiting yourself to either the 30-30 in lever action * Marlin or Winchester* and are wanting to choose between it and an automatic 243 i would go with the 30-30. Mainly because im not all that fond of automatics for hunting... I just have a preference to the bolt action if i can locate what i want and then if not then the lever action.
Were you just wanting a pref for a 30-30 or the 243 as a nice hunting round then i would lean toward the 243.
I have a Marlin lever action 30-30 and i love it for brush like we have here in Texas. But for open country where the shots are going to be 200 yards then id go for either my 243 or 270 for whitetail or mule deer. Get up into the mountains of New Mexico to where one doesnt know what the range might be and them ill take my 30-06.
Guns, best cal and that are like asking whats the best car? A lot has to do with what is gonna be used for and its just as much about opinions as what one shooter likes another thinks its crap.

I would definately take the 30-30, I rarely hunt varmints, I like lever action, I can't stand semi-autos, and I think wouldn't be comfortable with the take down power of a .243.

Because most game is harvested within 100 yards I would go with the 30-30. If you are going to use it for Groundhogs or Woodchucks then I would go with the 243 caliber.*

243, It is a much better deer and all around cartridge than the 30/30 and the Winchester 94 is not very accurate. Marlin 30/30's are better but stilll not tack drivers.

the .243.
If i had My choice, the rifle would be a Browning bolt action in .300 H&H Magnum.
I have 1, that i bought 43 years ago & have killed many amimals with it.
the largest, was an Alaskan Brown Bear ( kodiak ), that measured a couple of inches over 9'.
i load with bullets from 150-220 grain.
long range plus lots of knock down power

the 30/30 is one of the most time honored and field tested firearms in history. Look, if you're looking for shots between 0-150 meters, you can't loose with the 30/30, you can get a huge variety of ammo for it and ammo doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. and if that doesn't do it for you, then listen to the action when you rack that lever, it's so cool!

30-30 if I hunted in brush most of the time. 243 if I hunted in the open or across fields.

A lever action with a scope is a dangerous combination unless you have the trigger extention. A .243 is a much more accurate caliber and a 30.30 is for short ranges.

hi there
myself, i would go with the 243, great for varmints, right up to deer, long shooting and flat but still can shoot the short shots fine , it is not a great brush cutter like the 30-30 but you just have to pick your shooting area, the other thing about it is that the 30-30 with the scope will have a side hammer extension on it and i don't like them.
