I get responses back saying they are shock. Should I not be doing that? I though I was just being polite

That is quite nice of you, indeed. You either do not ask many questions, don't get SCORES of answers (like 40+), or you have a whole lotta time on your hands!

As for myself, if I particularly enjoy the answer, I will also email them (if possible), or add "additional details) to respond to it. Sometimes, I will also email someone who has answered some other question (or posed a question) which particularly strikes my fancy. I think it's nice to hear that someone out there actually appreciates the efforts they make.

Have a polite day.

You are being polite, which is unfortunately very rare in today's society. That is probably why people are shocked to receive them, people just either don't have the time to be polite,or don't take the time anymore.
Keep it up, maybe you will inspire others to take the time to be polite and think of others!!

There is nothing wrong with doing that. I am sure they are in shock beacuse they don't believe that someone would take the time to thank them. You never know maybe a few friends will be made because of it.

I have received a couple of emails like that. I find it very rewarding. However, I think that you should reserve it only for those answerers who were really helpful. After all, some people are only answering to gain two points.

I think it's cool, I'd like it if someone thanked me for answering a question. I think they are just shocked because people don't do that a lot.
