Men and women think differently.
First, in Islam women are not required to cover their faces. The Quran mentions that women should cover their body, and the Prophet Muhammad explains that only the face and the hands can be seen. There are social customs in some countries where women cover their faces as well, and some Muslim scholars impose it but this is an extreme and the Quran does not really support it.
Modest dressing is required for men as well, but without the condition of covering the head. The reason is because of the difference between the nature of men and women.
Many people would site the reason as being that it's a way to protect women from the eyes of men. This might be true, but there could be another interesting reason. Women are more wary of their shape than men, and in a recent study done by a non-Muslim researcher in the US, it was found out that the performance of women is strongly affected by their shape, much more than the way men feel about their own shape. That's why one sees more attention given by women to their dress and makeup, while men don't do the same. This is a natural tendency and it's part of the beauty of being different.
So in reality, it's not only to protect women from men's gaze, but also to protect women's self confidence. If all women are alike in the street, then this would reduce the tension, internally and externally between women.
I've read and heard the comments of many Muslim women about the veil, and how it liberates them from having to worry about how men look at them. They are no longer slaves to the society that imposes on women a certain way of dressing in order to be nice and attractive. These opinions are given by many Western Muslim converts as well.
It is interesting that there are so many Muslim converts among women in the West, and not necessarily because they want to get married to an Arab, but rather, because they are clever and have found peace and liberation in Islam.
Peace-salaam.

Because men and women are different.
Why in the west is it OK for a man to walk around topless but for a woman to do so would lead to arrest?
Islam actuals honours women because it knows they have more self control than Men. Men are much more visual creatures than women - look at how many use porn compared to women. In any case in the Quran the verse telling women to wear veils are PRECEDED by verses telling men to lower their gaze. Muslim men also dress modestly -look at mens dress in any Muslim country (e.g saudi)

Women wear veils to be protected from strange men . Picture this two sisters walking together, past men, one of them is wearing a skirt and tight clothes and is'nt wearing a veil whilst the other sister is wearing the islamic veil and wearing modest clothing. Are the men going to pester the skirt wearing sister or the sister that's wearing modest clothing?
Those men are going to pester the skirt wearing sister without a doubt.
This is one of the many wisdoms behind the islamic veil.

all religions seek to control women in some form or fashion. women can bear children. the birth of a child detetmines many things, family alliances, transfer of money, power,entire nations have hinged on the head of a child. Women have raised queens,scientists,dictators and serial killers. Quite a mojo we have:-)
Christ himself was a child borne of a woman. If you can lock that up you rule your world. Men are incapable of controlling their own urges so they attempt to bully women because they are physically weaker. So they wrap the women up and hope for the best.
Man! That is some powerful stuff if you have to veil it,wrap it up and keep it under lock and key.
Remember that ladies!!!!

Religious head wear isn't mandated for men like it is for women, but modesty is. Although they don't have to wear something like hijab, many Muslim men do:

Mymymy: it's about time to pick up a book. You know, one of those things with all those words in it...
~~~~~~~
Lol! Dream says "they are even taught how to beat them in the right way." Yep, with a twig the size of a toothbrush, on the arm, and so lightly that it doesn't leave a mark of any kind. Don't know about you, but most people don't call that a "beating." And stop relying on hollywood movies for facts, lol!
~~~~~~~
Look, I know it's a bit complex for simple minds to understand, but a tap on the arm with a twig that cannot leave a mark is neither a hit nor a beating. If your husband (or boyfriend or whatever) taps (not even slaps, but taps) you on the rear, are you going to have him arrested for domestic abuse? Try doing that without making the cops rofl or get frustrated with you for wasting their time.

Muslim men cannot control their urges so that is one way to protect women. Another reason is that it may be the only way to control their women. In any case it is against freedom and it should not be tolerated by a free society.

It's called dominating women. And it is not what God taught at all...he said you are to love your wife as Jesus loves the Church....they abuse their wives,,,they are even taught how to beat them in the right way. I don't believe most of the young women converts here in the States understand what would happen to them in the Middle East or to their children. They might think twice about embracing this religion. Your children will belong to the man,,not to you...if you decide to leave him if he abuses you...you will leave without your children....
