Bring your own bombs!

Looks like I'm not the only one who likes System of a Down.

I'm not goint to be a jerk and pretend I don't know what you are talking about like some of the other guys...although it is tempting! I also did a little research for you... the average household income for recruits families is about the same as non recruits give or take a couple hundred dollars. 98% have a high school degree as opposed to 75% of ne none recruit population having one. Black and native Americans are over represented and asian americans are underrepresented while whites are proportionate, and about 29% come from completely urban areas. since 9/11 the percent of recruits with a college degree or experience has increased. Some findings even show that the percentage of low income recruits is low in proportion to the population. With all that said I would assume the the ASVAB test like the SAT would be easier for those of more affluent backgrounds, thus giving them a pick at the better jobs, leaving those coming from inferior neighborhoods with inferior schooling to do the jobs like infantry and other things that allow lower scores. So eventhough the recruitment might be equal on all sides, the job placement may not be because it depends on a standardized test! So i can see both sides of the argument...

Well, if you're implying that economically disadvantaged people make up a large portion of the US armed forces, keep in mind that most people would make more money in civilian jobs than military positions.

If you want to take that one step further and say that the rich are sending poor, uneducated kids to get shot up so their kids don't have to fight, no one is forcing people to enlist. There's hundreds of thousands of bright, gifted young people from middle class families who enlist simply because they want to give something back to their country or they want to use military service as a springboard for their careers.

Granted, there's some "bad" recruiters out there. However, you are responsible for researching your career options, not your parents, the government, or your high school civics teacher. Would you enroll in a college without reading everything you could find on it and visiting the campus first? Why would you enlist without learning everything you could about the military first?

Why do people that know nothing about a situation make such extremely broad statements?

I would not say that only poor people join the military. I was in the military and while i was not wealthy at the time i was earning about 35k a year. The US military also is not uneducated 99% of the military members have either a GED or high school diploma and the same can not be said for the general population which was at around a 80% or something. A great deal of military people also have a college education and even more continue there education after or during there time in the military. Military pay might not be the best when compaired to soldiers of fortune BUT they pay isn't that bad and the system to get a raise is pretty fair if your serious about earning more while in the military then you can earn it.

Such extremly biased questions simply point out the ignorance of people that have never served. Or perhaps you are wealthy and just very out of touch.

They send the 'relative poor' because the rich (which are the leaders) do not want to die, so in the sense that the army are poor compared to the ones that send them.

The context of the Question in SOAD song asks first "Why don't president's fight the war? Why do they always send the poor?" - it's more about he inequality of the people making the decisions about fighting a war and the people who die fighting it.....

The question we ask ourselves is not about middle class - it's about the 1% sending everyone else (the poor to these rich 1%) to fight wars that make them more money or give them more power - I think he's referring to lack of value a person's life has to some of these decision makers..... the song also refers to lies "from the tablecloth" no less......

Why do they send the poor? Why are you using System of a Downs lyrics?

We are fortunate enough to make a 6 figure income. We are not considered poor by any means. My son joined the army because he thought it was the right thing to do. Your stupid question has no basis. Just ignorance much like the statement of Samuel Park's.

Because they can't develop a complete and well-thought out question. They will say things like:"Why do they always send the poor?" Who is they? What is poor? Where are they being sent?

They don't.

Demographically - the US military is primarily composed of people from the 'middle class.' People from the more wealthy classes are over-represented (in other words, there is a higher percentage of people from those classes in the military than their percentage of the population).

The only social class that is under-represented in the military is the poor.

I'm going to be hitting 6 figures before long with ALL pay and benifits. If you consider that poor, okay.
